| Training for the ring? Those of you who show, how do you train your prospects to the ring and the table? I have two pretty nice boys that do great at home with training, absolutely beautiful, tails up, ears up, confident gait and, once on the table, steady as rocks. But I get them to the show, they go scared. Tails and ears down, they don't want the judge to touch them, shy in the ring. I walk them around the show to settle them down beforehand. It happens at every show and I just can't find the key to get them into rhythm. I've tried baiting and their toys to keep their attention. I've tried doing their topknots at home and going directly to the show ring and I've tried getting to the show various amounts of time prior to showing so that they may become accustomed to the sights, sounds, smells. Nothing is working. It's like the song 'Freak Out' starts playing as soon as we enter the ring. Any ideas? Last edited by thoap; 09-12-2008 at 05:35 PM. |

| Awe...We take our show prospect puppies out and about...We also take them to handling classes to expose them to the table, ring and strangers going over them...Puppy matches are great fun and good experience for the pups also!...Good luck with your babies!

| Some just hate the shows, unfortunately. Try to find a training-group for your dogs. I've seen it helps. How on earth do you get your dogs to stay in place on the table? Mine just want to kiss the judge and are so excited they are just about to explode, tails wiggling and the whole dog shaking... Not a calm and cool elegant pose... |

| If not at the show, they stay perfectly still on the table. Not sure why. I hold them gently under the neck and push forward under the tail to square them up and they hold perfectly still.................unless we are in the darn ring!!!! I do think that y'all are right. I've got to get them out a lot more often and into a practice/ training group. Maybe if they do it enough, they'll not be so skittish. |
