Default Advise for raising 2 Yorkie show hopefuls?

I may be getting another show hopeuful puppy. She will be 12 weeks when/if I like and buy her. I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for having 2. I never intended on having 2 "show" puppies and neither did my dear husband

Do you all have any great tips that could help me raise the "show" puppies together more easily and efficiently?

Daisy is 5 months and new puppy girl will be 12 weeks.

I was thinking about potty training, night time sleeping, feeding schedule or not?, rules for running about the house or ALWAYs keeping confined to area etc.?

Daisy is almost potty trained...to pads in the shower mostly. We are trying to add the garage as another small penned area for potty on pads.

OK....who wants to give me some grand advise and tips....OR JUST TELL ME I'M CRAZY!

If I get her, I'll most certainly post pictures.

I really wouldn't purchase a show hopeful until closer to 6 months of age. They can really fall apart or come together between 3 and 6 months old and with the expense I'd rather not take the gamble.

I completely agree with Tami. You have time to find your next show baby since you already have one to work with. Even at 6 months you will not know for sure with every puppy, but the chances of getting what you are looking for is so much greater!

Default pups

I have always found I had to separate puppies when I wanted to grow a show coat..some play time was okay, but they slept separate...I had to watch for out of control wrestling...I have had a few top knots destroyed that way...I let my pups play with the adults who were much gentler with them...

Great things to think about. I know it's wise to wait until they are 6 mos. old. This is through a friend of mine and we know it's only a hopeful. If things don't work out, which I know they might not, we have a plan.

But, this is very good wisdom because as I am experiencing now, things don't always come together the way we think they will.

I have not made any commitments to buy her, so we'll see what I think.

Personally I prefer the gamble to have the puppy young so that I can work with her at a young age. I enjoy training them in a way that works well for our family. Sometimes when you get them at 6 months, they are harder to break of certain habits they come with. This is just one positive aspect of getting them young. But I know from the "show" guarantee perspective, ya just can't be sure at 12 weeks.

As long as you know and understand what you are doing...then I say 2 is twice the fun...but twice the expense..lol. It can really start to get pricey entering more than one in a show, twice as much work with the coat, our boys stay in wrappers and wrapping jackets which really help so they can play. We do keep our show hopeful puppies separated in their own exercise pen at night, mostly for their safety...but they can be tough on one anothers coats.

Wish you the best with what you decide.

Thank you! Tell me about those coats?? Years ago when I showed..15 + year ago, they said the coats made them get more mats and it was worse with the coat on. Do you have something special that doesn't mat the hair under the coat? Can you tell me how I could get one or did I see a post in a thread that you make these? Tell me about them? I'd love to have a better way of growing coat. All I have ever known is wrappers.

I would probably only show one at a time or alternate. I'm not in a hurry unless a coat turns too light or something that would rush me.

I'm worried about have two puppies at night time keeping me awake I love my sleep now that my kiddos are 8 and 6

We use the plastic wrappers from Lainee and then my mom has an online store, she makes the satin lined wrapping jackets. Welcome to Poochie Petite ~ "Spoiling your pooch to perfection..." She designed these because the other ones we tried caused a lot of matting. The coat will mat if you go too long between re-wrapping or re-bathing/oiling, but I find that this happens with just wrappers too. What I do find is that if they roll in their beds or play rough the jackets help protect the coat from breaking at the wrapper. We have been using the Summerwinds Protect-a-coat and have seen a huge difference in the condition of the coat and their skin.

This is what I have been doing for our Elvis who I posted pics of tonight. Last September his coat was about 3/4 of the way to the floor and now it is beyond it, and we trimmed it once already.

What is summer winds protect a coat? Is that like Ring 5 or is more like The Stuff or Ice on Ice? I've tried all of these, and I don't LOVE them, but she's not even in coat yet. I'd love to have a plan that works so the babies can play together!

I will for sure buy a jacket! I should wait until they are done growing don't ya think?

Definitely wait til she is done growing and you are ready for the jacket!
The Protect-a-coat is like a conditioning oil...you put a cup of it in a few inches of warm water (we put them in one of those small wash tubs next to our washer) after you rinse the conditioner out. Then you take this mixture and pour it up over the coat for 10 minutes, do not rinse and then dry. It is not a heavy oil really conditions the skin as well, so no dry flaky skin.

We put it on our show hopeful pups starting at 12-16 weeks old, so their coat starts out in excellent condition!

I hope this helps
We also use their conditioner and shampoo.

So here is my question on the deep conditioner/oil. Why oil the coat on a puppy so early? I have had breeders tell me NOT to start oiling if ever/ until 9 months or later? I'm just curious to hear your perspective. I've been told the oil breaks down the hair shaft and makes it eve weaker. Why not just wrap with a conditioning spray?

I want to do things the right way, but I hear so many different views. Seems like ALL specials dogs are always in oil and wraps.

Thanks

Hi Lili,

On the contrary the oil protects the hair from mating and breaking.I put my puppies on oil at 12 weeks.I couldnt imagine having my show coats without oil.I use Neutrogena Body Oil one capful in 8 onz of water.I've been using this for the past 12 years it is really great.

Good luck on your puppies!!
