Mentor advice..... I'm just looking for some advice here..... I would love to find a mentor locally but can you believe that I can't? I'm still looking but there is no breeder on the YTCA website in my area code, I have started going to local AKC kennel club meetings which covers 3 counties locally, I also looked into the next closest kennel club and there are no yorkie breeders who belong to either. So here is my question..... would it be better to try to find a local mentor who breeds a different toy breed, maybe poodles? Or would it be better to try to find someone who is not local but shows yorkies? Which would you do?

Thanks, I'm actually gonna go check now and see if there are any Maltese breeders. At the meeting there was a couple with King Charles Spaniels, 3 or 4 with Papillions (not sure if I spelled that right) and the Pres who breeds labs and Shipperke's (again, not sure on that spelling) Thanks for the advise!

I think there is a Toy Poodle breeder around that area that used to breed Yorkies. I can't remember his name but you could ask some of the people yo meet.

Not all Yorkie show breeders are on the YTCA list. Have you tried going to any shows in your area? That's a great place to meet some of the smaller breeders. Infodog has all the show information by state: http://infodog.com/showinfo/state.htm

I had the same problem here and went to the local dog show where I met my Mentor. She is a Maltese breeder and has handled other breeds as well. She agreed to mentor me even tho this is the job of the person that you buy your show dog from. We are now great friends and talk on the phone every day. She made me agree to very strict rules, most of which are related to sharing w/ others what she has taught me. I have found that she is very willing to help others if they ask her tho. Once I started showing and getting in the ring, other exhibitors have been very willing to help me with suggestions here and there. It just takes time, but I suggest get w/ someone that shows a toy dog in your kennel club and learn how to show the dog. There is lots about coat care on here and there is also a link on my website under Yorkie Info to Jon-An's website and she has lots of good info on grooming, coat care, wrapping, and top knots. Good Luck!

I went to Schooley's Mountain Kennel Club show in Rockaway last year and there were several nice breeders there. There was one lady in particular that I really liked. She has been breeding and showing for many years. I will check my catalog and PM you her name. You could check results from past shows in your area to see if there is anyone local. Go to the event section of the AKC site to check results. | |

When I was showing my Skye Terriers, I had a long distance mentor!! I live in Arizona and she lives in New Hampshire. There were no Skyes in Arizona at all. I learned alot from her over the years and still do even though I dont show Skyes now. Maybe I will again someday.

I would try searching for just kennel clubs in your state. You will find all kinds of dog owners, not just yorkies but you still might make some good contacts.
