Hi,
After pet sitting a friend's Yorkie, I fell in love and decided I want a Yorkie of my own. Initially, I was looking into saving money to buy a Yorkie from a breeder but after watching a video on there are so many stray dogs I am looking into adopting instead.

I browsed through shelters and rescues online and finally found a cute male Yorkie that is 8 years old. The problem is the adoption fee is $450!! That is so expensive. I know buying from a breeder would be more but it would be a puppy. Why is it so expensive? I wish shelters and rescues could maybe lower the price.

If you know of any rescues or shelters with reasonable adoption fees by Orange County, CA please let me know

This might sound harsh but just my opinion
While 450 may sound outrageous for an older dog at a rescue you need to realize what rescues put out on sick dogs that they take in. I've had three yorkies two I bought as puppies from so called reputable breeders, my fife needed two new hips two knee surgeries also had a collapsed trachea. My second has a seizure disorder, also died of a collapsed trachea. My third cooper who rescued three years ago who has just turned 5 had a stroke. He is been in the hospital several days with many tests the fees so far are about 8k. I'm happy to pay it to try and fix my dog, my point here is if you can't afford 450, perhaps a yorkie is not for you. Not saying all yorkies get sick but they might.

Yorkie Haven Rescue Adoption Fees

It is a good breakdown of where your fees go and what the expenses are...and that is for a healthy dog. Rescues depend on the adoption fees to help supplement some of the costs, and by far, the adoption fees don't cover everything.

My friend just paid $325 to adopt a mixed breed adult dog from the Humane Society!! So, $450 for a purebred yorkie, IMO isn't super steep,especially for California.

I paid $150 for my 2 year old rescue pup, but I know I lucked out!! I had no idea what the adoption fee was when I went to pick up my little guy so I brought a lot more money than that. My jaw dropped when I found out how cheap he was because he was neutered, had his shots and had to have his baby teeth removed. I definitely plan on sending a donation to the rescue for Christmas because I know how much they did for my little guy.

Also check out Lancaster and Devore city shelters, they list a lot of available dogs on their facebook pages. They are high kill and have yorkies often.

Yes, .... but to the OP.........be prepared for vetting costs. Many pups you pick up from a shelter need extensive vetting, especially dentals. It is not cheap to own a yorkie. Hopefully, if you read the link about about adoption fees you paid careful attention to what you will be paying for vetting if you want to properly care for your yorkie.
