I have the highest respect for Mr Smith and the work that he and his organization does. This method of dealing with puppy mills directly is not for everyone, though, and will take years to build these relationships.

I have nothing against these groups, but I can tell you I could never do it.

I see yorkies being euthanized in shelters because there are no foster homes for them. I feel strongly that until we can save every yorkie in the shelters, then we should not use up foster home space by helping to make room in the mills. I have heard the opposite opinions about how the millers will kill them. While it may be true, it still does not answer for me how those pups in the shelters (many of which came from mills) should be left to die. I believe they are priority number one.

If people know those millers are putting bullets in their heads, instead of getting friendly with them to get pups, why not get friendly enough to get evidence to shut them down? Just my opinion...

Second concern is how 501(c) works? For instance, I want to start with one dog only, and not planning to have a lot of them, especially at one time. We all understand that it will be a lot of expenses.... Is it OK to have a limit of dogs like 1 or 2 per year for 501 (c)? If, for any reason, I open a rescue, but will not rescue any dogs for certain time?

Some local rescues always have many dogs at one time, have many volunteers and fosters. In my situation, I will not be able to do it , maximum 1-2 dog so far, however I want to have a legal non-profit registration...

Sorry, if my questions look too naive, but I am still educating myself re this subject. Still thinking.....

Please, do not advice about opening private rescue or work for another rescues.

I do know some of local rescues, but they not very open to discuss how they work. Plus, with all my respect, some of them have so difficult adoption process (even if they try to do their best), that people get tired and...... as result we see more purchases from breeders.... some of them a little bit narrow-minded, sorry, and don't see the whole picture of this problem. One of rescuer just doesn't get why we do petstore protest!!! can you imagine?! Without educating public we never stop puppy mills. I do know some "pretended to be rescue", but they are breeders at same time !!!! I went to fundraising event for rescued dogs as vendor to just find out that they just have puppies from their breeding dogs (and btw, too many for one time ).


Also, there is something else in my mind, this is why I want 501 (c) only.

Pleaes do not get offended, but I am so confused regarding your post. I don't know, but this post just has way too many red flags in it, why is it so important to be 501 if you are just interested in 1-2 dogs a year? Call me nieve, but it sounds like you are more interested in the 501 non profit status than rescuing dogs. Why don't you just start at the local Shelters and rescue those dogs? Also, you stated quite some time ago that you travel quite a bit, has you're situation changed and you are now done traveling? Can you please help me understand

Where do you live~from you profile and info I am not able to tell? I live in IL and to tell you the truth there are hardly ever yorkies in the shelters here. When there are they are adopted quickly. Other regions of the country have huge issues. CA, TX, SC, MS IA, OH, IN had plenty of mills so the need it much greater in these state than where I live. I would think to become a rescue you would need to address the issues in your part of the country. In order to have a rescue that deals strictly with puppy mill rescue their would need to be a prevalent issue and need for the type of rescue you are planning.

Well, as I mentioned in very first post there is something "else" in my mind this is why I want 501(c). I am not ready to speak about those things yet. What I want to do is not rescuing dogs only, this is why. I have some project idea....This is why I mentioned about 1-2 dogs. At least, at very beginning.
I don't get offended, it is nice to hear different opinions, but trust me, there are not red flags re me.

I think everything clear in my post...

I am trying to do what I can, what fit my lifestyle, what I am able to do. Still better than don't do anything.

re traveling.... confusing.... I used to travel a lot because of my business... not anymore....

I got the impression you understood what a 501 was....you need to go to the IRS government website to read about tax exempt charities. This is not something to take lightly as this is between you and the government. Most organizations hire lawyers to walk them through this.

Now that is weird....she has been a member since 2004. Do you think she asked to be removed? Usually it says "No Longer A Member" when they ask to leave this forum...then again I don't know why people do this...just walk away if you don't want to be here anymore...

It i very odd that someone would out of the blue ask to be removed as a member I've gone back and looked at posts to see if there was something I was missing but nothing
