4 Month old Male (needs home ASAP) As some of you already know me and how my home is open to any living creature needing a home or help in finding a new home. I have recently received a 4 month old special needs yorkie puppy needing a forever home. I'm in desperate need of finding him a mommy or daddy that would take him in as their own and give him the medical treatment he needs. I would keep him myself but my finances are just not there at this time and I have just received 3 young pups from overseas that I have to bring to show etc. along with the fact that I have a 3 year old son running around.-my home is not the right place for him. my door is always open and I receive a lot of unwanted animals from potbelly pigs to horses. I try my best to find each and everyone of them a new forever loving home but sometimes I cant-so they end up living here. ok, enough about me. I would also like to be honest with everything going on-I totally forgot about yorkietalk and I had him posted on Internet classifieds only to receive over 200 e-mails from stupid people asking for a free dog! last night I received a e-mail from someone on yorkietalk that might be interested in him so that's why I'm here she reminded me of all of you caring folks who I have forgotten about with everything going on in my life. he is available -but the yorkietalk member who contacted me first will have first choice -if she feels would not be right for her then he is available to whom ever can supply him with the love he needs and give him a forever loving home! BELOW ARE A FEW BASIC Q & A I am interested in knowing more about him.. male-estimated adult weight 4 lbs. pure yorkie-not a mix! paper-litter box trained very loving -not a yapper! What exactly happened all we know is that he was accidentally stepped on by another dog when you have a older hyper dog you don't allow it to play with a tiny yorkie puppy! vet confirmed it! how extensive do you believe his treatment will be? well there are a few options, treatment by a chiropractor and med's to put his disk back in place or surgery to put disk back in place. he was given cordizone and was normal as any other dog but once med's were finished he returned to the way he was before med's. REPORT FROM VET: Compressed C 1 & C 2 vertibrare Causing neuralgic pressure while trying to stand and walk. Can he walk? on carpet he is fine, sometimes falls over. on a flat surface with no grip he doesn't do well. What are the terms you are asking in his treatment contract. I know he is worth it! basically you would have to agree that you will do your best to make sure he is seen by a vet of your choice and given whatever treatment that is recommended! we were told with surgery he can return to normal but were also told treatments would work as well. but most important is love -dogs (and any other animal) thrive on love! he really is a sweet dog! if you have any further questions, please feel free to call me 815 472-6151 or personally e-mail me dragonflyacres@aol.com Marie NO SCAMMERS!-PLEASE ONLY SERIOUS INQURIES, DONT WASTE MY TIME OR YOURS! |
Hi, Everyone. I am the YT member that spoke with Marie. I gave the info to my Vet and he wanted to examine the puppy and see his Vet records. It's quite a drive from where Marie lives to Valparaiso, IN so I had her call my Vet. Her daughter is a Vet Tech so she called an spoke with him. My Vet is very interested in helping this little guy. He prescribed 1/4 of a Rimadyl tablet, twice a day for one week, and asked me to have Marie or her daughter bring him in with me, next week Thursday. He said there will be no charge for the Vet exam, because I am the one that wants to adopt him. He has known me for many years, and knows the extent I have gone for my Wildlife Babies and for my girls. I believe my Vet feels he can help him, otherwise he would not have gotten involved, and prescribed Rimadyl or want to examine him to see how well the Rimadyl worked. When my tiny Kia injured a disc in her back, a number of years ago, she was given a cortisone shot and Rimadyl and it worked. She re-injured it slightly a few years later, and I noticed immediately and got the Rimadyl refilled and she has been fine ever since. We just do not allow her the opportunity to jump. This little guy is in far better shape than Kia when she injured her disc, so I am thinking he probably won't require surgery, but if he does, I have great confidence in my Vets. I have left Marie a message on her voice-mail, and am waiting to hear back if she is willing to travel out here. People travel from Michigan and the Northern Suburbs of IL to see the Vets at McAfee Animal Hospital. If Marie feels this is too far a distance to drive, please someone that lives closer, step up. I really believe, from talking to her, he is going to be fine. These little ones do amazing with LOVE. Even if he never walks quite right again, he is a sweet, loving little guy and that would not prevent Rich or I from taking him. Sheila |
I am so sorry to hear about this sweet boy.I hope he he finds a forever home soon. Yorkieville200 you are a kind person with a big heart.I hope a train or some other means of getting this baby to you are forthcomming. |
I have also been in contact with her and she has my cell number. :) |
Thank you so much. I am awaiting Marie's call. I am sure she is thinking 50 miles is a long way to drive, to see a Vet she does not know, but I know this Vet very well. He has a heart of pure gold, and knows Yorkies very well. All the years I did Orphaned Wildlife Fostering, he never charged me for an exam or a medication. He said if she will come in with me, he will waive the office fee. I know he would not get involved and prescribe the Rimadyl if he did not feel this little guy could be helped. He wants her or her daughter to come to the first appointment with Rich and I, otherwise Rich and I would gladly drive out and get him. I also think it would put her at ease to meet Dr. Larry, and Rich and I. In speaking with her, I know that she cares very much about where he spends his life. So, I am praying she returns my call and is willing to bring him out for the exam. The cortisone and Rimadyl did the trick for my tiny Kia so I am praying the Rimadyl helps this little one. I love animals, I've fostered so many babies over the years. And I adore my Yorkies! My girls are my life. Sydney heard me talking to Daddy about a sick baby puppy and she stood up on her little hind legs, and looked at us, as if to say, "Where is the baby?" She is so smart, she knows the words "sick baby" so well, from all my years as a Wildlife Fosterer. We definitely have room in our hearts for a Special Needs Baby. But seriously, if there is anyone here, that lives closer, I would not be a bit upset if you contact Marie. I just want this little guy to get the help he needs, and a loving forever family. Sheila |

I had received an e-mail from Marie this morning, asking if we could get him in on Monday or Tuesday, but my Vet only works 3 days a week, and Thursday is his only "patient" day, the other two he does surgery. My Vet had wanted to see him next Thursday, but Marie has had a serious family emergency arise, so I am just waiting to find out if she will be able to bring him out. Or if she needs to delay it a week. Or, if she wants to go another route. Thank you for your prayers, they are greatly appreciated. Believe me, I am not awesome. It's just that after 35 years of raising orphaned wildlife babies, I care very deeply about Special Needs Babies and this little guy needs a permanent home where he can recover and know that even if he doesn't get any better than he is right now, he is loved & pampered. Our home is quiet and I think he would be happy here. He is such a young baby, and I feel he deserves a chance to have a full life. |
I am wondering if this puppy has had an MRI? Has it not been recommended? |
OK..Now I am really confused. I missed that part in the original post where it said surgery would return him to normal. If that is the case, why would a vet say that he also could improve with other treatments. That makes NO sense to me. Who suggests surgery not needed. I really believe this puppy from what I am reading with his vertebrae involved and with neurological issues needs to have a Board Certified Surgeon examine him to determine his best treatment plan which I am betting is surgery. Just my two cents. I do hope that someone who can afford the above will end up with him. That is what he needs in my opinion. I have a foster in my home that people probably could not afford to repair so they left him the way he was for years...with a deformed hip. Oh, he was walking .. but he also limped...and his leg shook. Obviously very painful. Horrific to me that someone left him like that. We are spending $3,000 for his surgery and will spend more for his therapy. I had another one a few years ago who chewed his foot off because he was in so much pain from a pelvic fracture that the owners could not afford to repair. The vet report on him said that the owners had put him in a crate hoping his pelvis would heal in spite of being told surgery was the best option. So...when we got him, he had chewed the entire foot off and the leg had to be amputated. Please!!! If a vet has suggested surgery on this puppy, be sure that is what he gets. |

Actually, Jodi and I have been discussing this matter via e-mail, and my husband and I are beginning to feel he would be better off in Jodi's Rescue. Jodi has already spoken to her Vet, and has been given a pretty clear course of what treatments he may require. It could be extremely expensive for one family to afford, particularly when we have two Senior Yorkies of our own. I believe, that the questions you bring up, are the very reason that my Vet did not give us the "go ahead" to adopt him. He has insisted that Marie attend an appointment with the puppy and bring all of his medical records. I am quite puzzled by the very same things you question. I do not know if this puppy has had an MRI. |

He went 4 weeks after the injury without seeing a Vet. In my opinion, that is inexcusable! However, I am very confused as to why no treatment has been done, other than a cortisone shot. He was fine on the cortisone, but off of it returned to his previous state. He can not walk on smooth surfaces. He can walk on carpet, but sometimes falls over. Now, years ago, my tiny 4# Kia jumped off a 12" mattress that was on the floor, while we were putting things together in our new home, after just installing oak flooring. I realize, she should not have been allowed to play on that mattress. And believe me, I was extremely upset with myself. My baby suffered because I allowed her to do something that turned out to be dangerous.(Both my girls had been playing on the mattress for several days, and that one day, she jumped, "wrong". She has never been allowed to jump, since then, and she seems to know she shouldn't jump.) We noticed, very quickly, that she was walking with her back, roached, and her rump, down, and took her, immediately that day to our Vet. He gave her a cortisone shot and a round of Rimadyl and she healed very nicely. No surgery needed. But, time is off the essence with these little ones. If we had waited a day, the outcome would have been quite different, I'm sure. The only thing that I know that has been done is an x-ray and he does not have a fracture. I have not heard further from Maire. I had e-mailed and called her yesterday, reached her voice-mail, and told her that if she was going to bring him out to see my Vet on Thursday, that I needed to make the appointment yesterday. So, it is now, too late to have my Vet see him. My Vets stipulation was that they give him 1/4 of a Rimadyl twice a day for a week, and he would examine him on Thursday to assess how well, the Rimadyl helped him. |
Quote:
I wish I could have helped him, but for one thing, Marie did not get back to me, at all in regards to getting the appointment scheduled. And I had left her a voice-mail and an e-mail yesterday morning, that I needed to schedule the appointment at the latest, yesterday, because as she new my Vet required to see him after he had taken the Rimadyl he prescribed, for one week. My Vet was providing this exam at no cost, as a favor to me. We had talked on Thursday and Friday and my Vet had also spoken to her daughter, who is a Vet Tech and he had prescribed the Rimadyl and told her that he wanted to see him after he had been on the Rimadyl one week. It was very important that he be seen at that one week mark. I spent a lot of time, talking to my Vet, my chiropractor, Maire, and I've lost several nights of sleep worrying about getting things done. My Vet has zero tolerance for people that do not follow his directions. He didn't get to be a top Vet by doing things, in a sloppy manner. Another thing, I have been advised by Rescue that his medical bills may be up-wards of $5,000. And that I wouldn't know for 6 months, if he had improved, or would require surgery. An MRI would cost $2,000 and surgery can start at $3,000. My husband and I do not feel we can spend that money, when we have two Senior Yorkies of our own already, and will most likely need more medical care as they age. When our first Yorkie became ill when she was 9, her medical bills were extremely high the remaining 4 years of her life. Her remaining 4 years were good years (until she became very sick in her last few months of life), and that was because she had excellent Vet care. We want no less for our other senior girls. I have a few friends, that breed on a very limited basis, and show, and they do Rescue, and they Vet each dog they take in as a Rescue, before they are adopted. Their retirees remain in their family. They disagree, wholeheartedly, with a breeder doing rescue and not vetting the dogs. As disheartened as I am to say it, I think this little guy is going to need to go into a good Rescue that can raise the money for what I believe, are going to be major Vet bills. |
Just reading this thread....I hope someone hears from her, and that this little guy can get into a rescue that can help him and his medical needs.... |
The last that I heard from her was before the weekend when she told me that she and her daughter would be going to see Dr. Larry in Valpo on Monday (tomorrow) and have not heard anything since. :( This and what Yorkieville200 just posted are not adding up to the same story. I do not know what else to think at this point. |
Quote:
If by any chance I hear from her, I am going to refer her to Yorkshire Terrier Rescue or Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue. I am very disappointed that she did not get back to me for me to schedule the appointment with my Vet. This baby did not deserve to go this long, untreated. |
Quote:
I was very clear that Dr. Larry does not see patients any day but Thursday. He spoke with her daughter, the Vet Tech this past Thursday ad prescribed the Rimadyl and told her that he needed to see him after he had been on the Rimadyl one week. He only works in the clinic 3 days a week now. He is in surgery the other two days, and she has no idea how lucky she was to have had the chance to have him examine this puppy. Between him and Dr. Steve, I have never seen any Vet diagnose & treat, so well. (I wish my doctors were this good!) |

We donate monthly to our local Rescue. They are small and don't get the national recognition, so they depend on the community. I agree, he does need to go to a Rescue that gets major donations. And no, in so many cases, esp. this one, love is not enough to heal him, and that is, as you said, IF he can be made well. He is certainly worth rescuing, and I hope Marie has decided she should Vet him, herself, or that he needs to go to a major Rescue. |
Quote:
IF another rescue did not step up, then we would do our best to find a solution for him. The problem right now is that it looks like this woman does not want anyone to help. |
Quote:
It's a relief to know, that if another Rescue won't be able to take him, your Rescue will do your best to find a solution for him. I am hoping, the reason that she has not contacted me, is that she realized, as a Breeder, that took him in as a rescue, that she should continue with her Vet and have him treated. Many breeders feel, they have a responsibility to do rescue of their own breed, to give something back to the breed. |
Quote:
Responsible breeders DO rescue....but they do not ignore medical conditions or short cut on treatments which she clearly admitted doing. I will say it as I have said before...there is no big money in breeding unless you are a large operation and neglect the medical needs of the pups who need it. I totally do NOT understand people sometimes. Here there were plenty of people trying to help and she disappears. I don't care what is happening in her life...the poor pup needs to be seen by a vet. They are not able to speak for themselves or get the help they need. .. Makes me want to scream. I suppose I need to ignore this thread because it just infuriates me and I know I cannot control what others do. We cannot save them all. :( |
