I'm trying to do the right thing and buy something that will be safe for driving with Winston. He likes to sit on my lap. Usually laying down, but sometimes will sit looking out the window.

I bought a padded harness (padded so it's more comfortable) that attaches to the seatbelt. Winston cried and cried and kept scooting away from the seatbelt (but not really getting anywhere because he was buckled in). He kept on barking and was going crazy. He's big so he was now almost falling off of the seat and was all of the way by the gear shift. I had to unbuckle him.

I bought a raised seat. I couldn't even get him to sit in it. I buckled him in quick. He hung out of it, still attached at the back, crying and barking. Again, I had to unbuckle him.

What works for you?

I have the same issue so I'm interested to hear the responses. Olive and I are going on a 6 hour driving trip next week and any advice would be helpful!

My little one travels only in his kennel. We have taken him on every trip we've been on and he is a great traveler! There were a couple of instances when I would get him out of his kennel and hold him but then he would whine to get back in it...

Does your baby sleep in his kennel or spend any time in one? You might try driving around the block with him in his kennel and gradually drive further so that he gets used to it.

Good advice. My baby hates her kennel though. I want to train her to use it but my job was very busy during Spring Break and I couldn't make it home to let her out. Now that Spring Break is just about over, I should be able to start, but that won't help me through my car ride next weekend! I guess I'll just have to put up with her in my lap for now!

Actually we just folded up Winston's crate a few days ago. He hasn't been in it for months. My husband works night so Winston has been sleeping in bed with me. During the day he plays in the den and only went in his kennel if he heard a loud truck outside or something. Then if we couldn't find him we'd look in his crate. Lately though he's been going into the bathroom when he hears a loud noise, like when the smoke detector was beeping for a battery change. We found him sitting against the wall in the bathroom in the dark. Weird.

Could you attach him to your seatbelt? Then he could be in your lap but still have the safety of not being loose in the vehicle. This is just a idea.

Diji is still little so when I travel I place a laundry basket on the front seat and slip the seatbelt through the handles and click it in. I make sure that the belt is pulling tightly through the handles so the basket doesn't move.
I then put Diji's blanket in the basket and put him inside. The basket has lots of hole about 2cm wide so Diji can see through it. It's worked very well for me. Diji and I travel in the car for about an hour on a weekly basis. He niggles a bit when the car is stationary but as soon as we get
Moving he falls asleep.

When I first got Callie her car seat she would try to step out of it even being buckled in and I would put her back in and say no and kept doing that and now she loves her carseat as soon as the car door opens she jumps in and runs to her car seat and jumps in it.

Cerise rides in the Snoozer Lookout car seat. Lately she does whine sometimes to be up front with me and hangs her head over the front of her seat trying to get my sympathy

but I tell her "No, sit" and she stops.

I would put him in the car seat and repeat "No, sit" a hundred times because it is best for him and eventually he'll realize that he has to sit and enjoy the ride. You might place a Bully Stick and a favorite squeaky toy in the seat with him

Not a good one because of the air bag...it would hurt him or probably kill him if an accident happened

Sydney uses the

Travelin' Dog Pet Seat . I bought it from PetSmart, but I don't think they have it anymore. As it was, when I ordered it, it was on backorder. It works great, though. The seat also received good ratings. Syd, unfortunately, whines and barks while traveling in the car. If we're going down the road for a while, she'll eventually calm down and lay in the seat. But as soon as a turn signal comes on, she's whining and barking.

My yorkie Kenzie rides in her crate. Riding with her on my lap is not an option. It is just too dangerous. I agree with Cerise maybe put a bully stick or his favorite toy in the crate and little by little he will learn to enjoy it!
