Heartworm and Flea Prevention Its that time to start my furbabies on some meds but so many to choose from I'm not sure where to start. I heard Revolution is great but doesnt prevent hookworms or roundworms. I was thinking of Revolution and Advantage?I would like to hear what med combo are people using on their fubabies. |
I would use revolution or advantage not both. They both have pesticides in them and using both would be too much and also would be expensive,. I use advantage for fleas and heartquard for heartworm |
I use Advantage for fleas and Interceptor for heartworm. Heartguard (Ivermectin) has been known to lower the seizure threshold in some dogs, so I think Interceptor is a safer choice. |
Ive used heartquard for 4 yrs with no problems. My dogs dont have seizure problems |
To the OP call your vet and see what flea meds and heartworm meds he reccomends. My vet gives heartquard and advantage. I follow his advice over someone on an internet forum |

You are lucky you don't have to treat for fleas. Here in the Sandhills of North Carolina it is paradise for fleas. We have no choice. |

I hate fleas. You have to treat for them here even if you have cats that never go outside. They come in through screens, on your pant legs, etc. |
My opinion only: Both milbemycin oxime (Interceptor and Sentinel) and ivermectin (Heartgard and a couple others) are just fine for heartworms. I prefer Interceptor, however, more milbemycin oxime than necessary to control heartworms is used in a dose of Interceptor so that intestinal parasites are treated. So the dosing is still waaaay higher than needed and the weight breakdown doesn't mean much to me. If you don't want to treat for intestinal parasites, you are still overdosing with Interceptor. The safeheart dose (not available in the US) is about 1/5 of the dose we use here, I think. I do not like Revolution. The side effect rate is a concern and the number of dogs getting heartworms while on it is questionable at best. I would never trust it for heartworms. For fleas Frontline Plus and Advantage are okay if you have to use something. |
I'm in Louisiana, my vet recommends advantage multi. Prevents every type parasite including mosquito bites. I like that so much I have wondered if people can use. Well o.k it would be nice. |

I'm for sure Iverhart Max is a great heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, and tapeworm. |
