Since we got our new little "Sophie" so we have 2 to care for, so far I've settled on Heartgard and K9 Advantix. And they LOVE the Heartgard Chews!

I was using Advantage Multi on Charlie since it was simple and all in one but I like the idea of keeping mosquito's away in the warm months. So I switched up for now.

However, I've noticed that the K9 Advantix (Advantage Multi did it too) leaves them both scratching as close to there shoulders as they can get, and of course as small as they are, it runs down one or both sides a little bit. It's got to be irritating their skin but only lasts a day or two. Nonetheless, I don't like that they're scratching that much; to the point they'll pull a little hair off, or we brush or comb through to get the little bit of loose hair and the sticky out before giving them a rinse or wash.

Someone mentioned Multi and mosquito's above. That's the one thing it does NOT prevent. Although the dangers (heart worms) is handled by it, preventing bites is not. That's why I switched, at least in mosquito season.

So I'm not settled yet until I find something that's effective and doesn't irritate them,

As an aside, I trust a vet's recommendation, but when it comes to drug treatments, I also research myself. It's like any drug or pharma. which is a huge business, there are relationships built and while I'm sure most don't make recommendations 100% on financial benefit (I'm sure some do) what a vet can sell that is the most financially rewarding will likely be the way they'll lean. Hopefully they built that relationship 1st on what they truly feel is the best but you never know. A good one on one with good questions about other treatments should allow a good vet to share more honest feedback. Business is still business and the pet business is huge and buyers are driven by emotion which gives the "seller" the upper hand.

I'm not distrusting or anything, I'm just cautious. :D

I have used Sentinel for many years and I haven't seen a flea in at least 25 years.

Sentinel is an all-purpose flea/heartworm and intestinal parasite med. It also has a dose for 2-10 lb. dogs, so it can even be used on puppies. I get terribly worried when my 3.5# dog is given meds at a dose rate for a 25# dog. It's also in range for ol' Puddie the Porker (8#), so one size does all!

If you can get a script from your vet. BUy it from HeartlandVetSupply.com they are the lowest. My vet says that you can actually split the tablets up. So say you have a 5lb yorkie. IF you wanted to, you COULD buy the 20lb version and split into 4s and viola you have 4 times the doses. I asked three other vets if this is ok, and they all said yes but a vet secret LOL.

In the case of Heartgard chews, it isn't okay because the Ivermectin is injected after the chew is made. Half of the pill could contain the whole dose and the other half could contain nothing...

Which is better Sentinel or Revolution. Two different vets prescribed my babies Revolution and they have been on it since pups but I always worry about heartworms. They get checked annually but I am nervous until I hear the results.

There are quite a few reports of dogs getting heartworms while on Revolution.

I was the one who mentioned advantage multi as taking care of mosquitos in addition to all other parasites. Of course I really thought that it did.

Living in Louisiana that would be a good bonus for a flea med.

Now, how did the mental mix-up happen?? Seems like I was told takes care of all biting insects with exception of biting flies (horseflies). That would infer mosquitoes.

Just goes to show, I consider myself a thorough person, but human nature is to SEE and HEAR what we want to SEE and HEAR. Now I will go and try to discover the reality of the situation.

I've been using Interceptor for heatworm and Frontline Plus for fleas. :)

Prince uses Revolution. He has tried several others, but he ends up vomiting them up. I tried Revolution because it is topical; he tolerates it much better.
Do you have the links that state dogs are getting heartworms while on Revolution? If so, please post it. I have three more dosages left.

Here is a site (haven't checked to see if they really did get their info from reliable sources) that says Revolution is responsible for the most reactions besides ProHeart. That wouldn't be a huge deal if the majority of dog took Revolution, because then it would stand to reason, but I don't think that's the case. It's a newer med and I would guess more dogs take Heartgard and Interceptor. Of course this may not apply to Prince since he can't even hold down the other ones.

As for the dogs getting heartworms while on it, that is just something some people are reporting. There have been a couple-few reports here on YT about it. MyFair Lacy (in vet school) has heard of dogs getting heartworms while on it and somebody else said their vet office is reporting it too. Then you have the people on the internet:

It can happen with any med, but there are just too many reports with Revolution, IMO.
