| [News] Hugging Couple Keeps Yorkie Barking Dear Dr. Fox: We adopted a mini Yorkshire terrier last December, and we've had a few problems. All in all, she is very sweet, but during the past couple of months she has been barking a lot. If my husband and I go near each other, she starts barking like a maniac. Please help. L.B., Yaphank, N.Y. Dear L.B.: Dogs bark for many reasons, and they have different barks for warning, greeting, threatening, attention-seeking and when simply excited. I doubt your dog is giving threatening barks or is motivated to protect you from your husband. She's either excited or, more likely, she wants attention. It's quite possible she's jealous. Picking her up when she's in her barking frenzy to quiet her is just what she wants, and by so doing you will be rewarding her for barking and reinforcing such behavior. Both of you should simply ignore her and put her through a dozen or so episodes of you hugging your husband briefly. After a few minutes, hug again. Do this for a few days, and it should extinguish her reaction. Dear Dr. Fox: It seems like every commercial cat food, canned or dry, disagrees with my senior cat, resulting in diarrhea or vomiting. I tried a recipe for homemade cat food I got from the Internet that calls for either ground beef or ground turkey. As a vegetarian, I'm wondering if I could substitute textured soy protein, or would her system reject it? Do you have a recipe? M.C., Selma, Calif. Dear M.C.: Food allergies and hypersensitivity can cause cats to vomit and have diarrhea, but there are other causes, too. A full checkup by a veterinarian is advisable before concluding that your cat's problem is dietary in origin. Many cats are especially allergic to beef, fish, corn and dairy products. Also, many cats suffer from chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes diarrhea and house soiling. Try my basic cat-food recipe posted on my Web site at www.doctormwfox.org. Soy protein can be a problem for both dogs and cats, often causing indigestion and flatulence/bloating. It is not an adequate protein source for cats, since it is lacking in some essential amino acids. Dear Dr. Fox: My family has many pets — seven, to be exact. My concern is for a certain parakeet of ours. We have four parakeets that live in a cage in the bathroom under a window next to the toilet paper. My concern is that she chews the toilet paper into little pieces. She doesn't eat them, just leaves them in a pile on the floor. Why is she doing this, and how can we prevent it? M.B., Alexandria, Va. Dear M.B.: Give your birds an open cage in the bathroom or another safe room with lots of play items in addition to toilet paper. Bells, mirrors, branches, balls, ladders, swings, ropes, a little water bath and a tray of sand are some of the many enrichment items to put in your birds' environment, be it their own room or a large indoor-outdoor flight cage, which would be ideal. Cost notwithstanding, your birds would be healthier and happier living in a flight cage. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/life/3976862.html |
