| [News] Man Held in Robberies, Dog Killing in Oakland OAKLAND — A convicted drug dealer from San Francisco has been arrested in a string of Oakland robberies, including one in which a victim's pit bull was shot and killed while defending its owner, police said Monday. Investigators believe the suspect, Antonio Russell, 20, committed more than a dozen street robberies between early March and last Tuesday, the day before he was arrested in Richmond. Multiple victims and witnesses identified Russell on Monday night as a suspect at a physical lineup at policeheadquarters. Sgt. Kevin Johnson said Monday that Russell, sometimes with an accomplice, often used rental cars to drive around and seek out victims. He was occasionally armed with a high-caliber pistol that he used to kill the pit bull while trying to rob the dog's owner March 18, police said. Other victims were also wounded, one man by a bullet that ricocheted, police said. The robberies happened throughout East Oakland, often in areas that had easy access to a nearby freeway, Johnson said. Victims had their wallets, cash and credit and ATM cards taken. Johnson said Russell's picture was captured by surveillance cameras when he used one victim's ATM card in San Leandro and Oakland. Those pictures also looked like the suspect in the pit bull mugging. One victim was robbed while walking his two pit bulls. One of the dogs chased the suspect away but was shot and killed in the process. That robbery was also captured on video by a neighbor's surveillance camera. Police said Russell also looks a lot like a man suspected of stealing a woman's Yorkshire terrier in February. That dog was killed, too, possibly strangled while the terrier's owner fought to rescue the tiny dog from her captor. Police were able to create a composite sketch of that suspect from witnesses' accounts. It was Russell's arrest in Richmond that led to the break Oakland needed in their cases, Johnson said. Russell and another man were involved in what police said was apparently a drug-related shooting Wednesday on South Sixth Street in Richmond. The other man was wounded, and Russell took him to a hospital. He gave police a false name, but they were able to determine his actual name and arrested him. The rental car the men were in was confiscated by Richmond police, who did not know at the time it was used in at least one Oakland robbery. Oakland Officer Tim Kelly coincidentally happened to run a computer check on the plate the day after Russell was arrested and learned that the car had been impounded and Russell was in custody in Richmond. He was brought to Oakland, where he admitted involvement in at least one robbery, police said. Investigators expect to present their cases to the district attorney's office today for formal charging. http://www.orovillemr.com/news/bayarea/ci_3646970 |
