HOWARD, AZ --
A small Yorkshire terrier took the trip of a lifetime. He made it from Tucson, Arizona all the way to Howard, Wisconsin all on his own, WLUK-TV reports.

Linda Baldazo thought a bird may have picked up her dog, Nicholas, when he sneaked out through an unlocked gate at her home. She searched for the dog for two months, but she couldn't find him.

Eventually, a woman 1,800 miles away found Nicholas wandering along a street. She called animal control.

"When I got there, (there was a) cute little Yorkie dog just cute as a button and friendly. The first thing I do is I take my microchip reader and check because he didn't have any collar or tags on him," said Animal Control Officer Monica Hoff.

Nicholas' rescuers discovered through his microchip records that his owner lived in Tucson, Arizona. Baldazo couldn't believe they had found her dog so many miles away.

"It's amazing that he's over there," Baldazo told KGUN-TV. "If only he could tell us the story of how he got there...I would love to hear if only he could talk."

A veterinarian said it's too cold to put little Nicholas in the cargo area of a plane bound for Tucson, so Baldazo has decided to make her way up to Wisconsin to get Nicholas and bring him home.

The Bay Area Humane Society says if it wasn't for Nicholas' microchip, he may might have never made it back home to his owner.

So scary. That's one heck of a walk in the winter time. Poor thing is lucky that he didn't freeze to death.

OMG, that's so amazing, I wonder what the little guy was after, or is he just saying it's too damn hot in Arizona! I'm another fan of microchipping, so many dogs have been returned, sometimes it takes a while, but better late than never. I would love to know how he survived that long on his own.

This is just totally an amazing story. I can't thank the Lord enough for the owner of this little one and for keeping him safe on his journey.

Microchipping is so critical. When a yorkie showed up on my neighbor's porch we spent lots of time and effort trying to track the owner down, but the pup had no microchip. We went through so many Facebook ads and craigslist ads, and it seemed like almost every pup from the Lost Dogs of Texas Facebook page that was successfully reunited with his owner had a microchip.

I live in France and have two Yorkies. The French are very proud of dogs and you can bring them to the Cafe, Restaurants and Hotels. When you get a dog you have to register the dog and have it microchipped. This make it more difficult to steal a dog and to get a lost dog back.

Welcome to Yorkietalk. I love it that the French allow their dogs to go with them everywhere. I'm not sure why Americans are so unaccommodating to dogs. Some places that use to allow dogs are even forbidding them now, so its getting more restrictive, not less. I'm wondering, are most of your dogs well trained and don't bother other dogs or people?

Awesome story! So glad this baby is making his way back to his owners. I can just imagine how excited and thrilled they must be. I agree! Microchip all the way! I wish it were law every where! That would cut down on the number of dogs on the streets and in shelters.
