| [NEWS] Heartless Owners leaves Old and Sick Yorkie outside all night Freezing Temps SO SAD Heartless owner leaves old, sick dog outside all night long at S.I. animal shelter Heartless owner leaves old, sick dog outside all night long at S.I. animal shelter An old, sick Yorkshire terrier was dumped in the freezing cold outside a closed Staten Island animal shelter - and had to be euthanized. The pooch, which was more than 10 years old, was found early Thursday by workers arriving for work at the NYC Animal Care and Control shelter on Veterans Road West. The animal, trapped in a carrier and with no ID tags, was half frozen after hours in the 21-degree air. A tumor on his paw had erupted and his liver was failing when he was rushed to a veterinary hospital, where he was put down. It's unknown who dropped off the ailing dog or how long he was outside. The shelter was closed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. "You don't have to dump your animal; you have choices," said Fran Grimaldi of Pet ResQ Inc., which paid for the animal's medical care. "They should have waited for the shelter to open." Whoever dropped the dog there could face misdemeanor charges if caught. "You can't just drop an animal at a shelter," said Howard Lawrence, senior director of operations for the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement division. "You need to surrender an animal and do it appropriately." Dog owners are also required by law to keep their pets in appropriate shelter during cold weather and heat spells. |

| I just read that article (in our local paper) and burst out in tears. They said that the animal care workers brought the dog in and tried to warm him up. They named him Frosty. Who ever did this should be so ashamed of themselves. They could have waited until the shelter opened and surrendered the dog. What in the world is wrong with people??!! Rest in Peace, little Frosty. |

| Oh no. I live about 5 minutes from that shelter. I have dropped off lost dogs there on a few occasions and they have sometimes been reunited with their owners. (I'm always finding lost dogs.) I can't believe someone would do that. Unbelievable cruelty. Well Karma is a bommerang. |

| Carol607, I'm on SI too but I'm about 1/2 hour from the shelter. I hope they find out who did this and the District Attorney's office brings charges against them. |

| It's hard to believe that anyone could be this mean and heartless. Why do people like that even get an animal?

| This is just horribly cruel. It should be more than a misdemeanor to leave your dog outside to freeze. How sad.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That is horrible. The no kill shelter i voulunteer at has that happen a couple of times a month. Or they let the dog loose on the ground and the staff have to chase them down. I think it is a cowardly way of getting rid of your dog.

| Cruel and senseless people! I believe in karma and I hope whoever did that to the poor dog gets it! This is why I have lost hope for humans...*sigh* They didn't have to do what they did...they could have came back when the shelter is open and surrendered the dog appropriately...These people are too cruel!
