| I am not a PETA Fan at all. I feel that they have hurt animal activism more then help it! This goes to show that my gut feelings about Peta were correct! How sad for all those poor animals! They could have found good homes!

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh gosh...do I even reply, I ask myself? This thread seems it could get as heated as a thread on abortion. It really has that same feel to me. So, I'd just ask folks to take a breath, keep minds and hearts open. That's really it. Some of my thoughts, and I'm not looking to start an arguement about any of it: **keep in mind that really the ONLY reason that live animals are no longer being used in automobile crash tests is because of PETA **keep in mind that vivisection was brought to light and into the world's collective consciousness by PETA (and pretty much PETA alone) (if you have never seen a picture of LIVE dissection of an animal during medical testing, I assure you - it is beyond words) (I doubt any of us would even know what "vivisection" is if it weren't for PETA) **keep in mind that the actual EVENT of people engaging in anti-animal-testing (for medical or cosmetics etc) was again brought into the consciousness by PETA I'm just using a few examples (though there are many more) here to show that while YES, PETA gets annoyingly radical and marginalizes themselves - they have done good work toward elevating the rights of animals. Also, they enabled the "birth" of many other animal rights organizations who may perhaps be less marginalizing for people....and more directly "helpful" toward the animals, rather than animal legislation or publicity. Without peta, many of these other organizations never would have...well..."organized". As for the animals who were euthanized - of course I'm devastated, appalled and sickened. However, keep in mind that often the animals that PETA takes in are either unadoptable (using the same 3-tiered scale that all Humane Assns use) or, so ill as to be beyond medical help. If they are indeed adoptable or able to be rehabilitated, then that is greatly saddening. Many poor creatures, even at Humane Assns, are not. I'm not, btw, some ardent PETA supporter; I do support them, but only in certain ways. Bill Maher, an ardent PETA supporter was quoted as saying (I quote loosely here) "PETA does cross the line, perhaps. But if no one ever crosses the line about anything....then how do we know where the line is?" - and that's where my support feels a voice. That's where I "get" PETA. Although they alienate most folks, offend some, and marginalize themselves - I do feel that there is some benefit to their sometimes radical approach - and then this benefit trickles down to many of the "less-radical", less offensive and direct-care animal groups. Lastly, I want to say that I respect each and every one of you! If we didn't have opposing opinions and good, healthy arguments, and left and right - how ever would we find a good middle?

i TOTALLY agree. we get all caught up on sensationalized statistics, but don't think much further than that. out of how many animals they take in, just how many ARE really adoptable? where are they getting these animals? you all see "97%" but don't take the time to think a little deeper as to WHY that is.

| I don't like peta either but I do have to say that an animal lover can "stick a needle in and say it is for love". I was a kennel supervisor for many years at a Humane Society and I was in charge of euthanisa. I loved ever one of the animals that I put down. There is worse things out there than death. Not ever animal is adoptable. There are some animals that no one wants. Have You ever seen a dog go kennel crazy? I have. |

| Im sorry but have you ever seen an animal who is either so injured or sick that they are suffering so much they will never make it through. This is kinda like helping someone kill themselves. Only this is helpless pets. These pets only have us humans (and for some I use the word humans loosley) to take care of them. It is our responsibility to give love, food, shelter, and medical care when needed. Some people forget that and think of a dog or cat or other animal as a commidity. Just another toy that they get tired of and throw away. Where I live a lot of animals get dropped off near my home and I have adopted two of the cats that have come around. I have tried to catch some of the other animals to find homes. I do not call the dog catcher unless they threaten my human kids or my animals. Then they will have to be delt with as they do. I do try to do my part finding homes for these animals and have since moving here five years ago placed over twenty animals. Many more became wild and have since not been seen. A lot of people do not notice or admit to doing this however add to the populations to the pounds, shelters, etc. If someone finds a pet and thinks they would like to have one just because it is so cute not thinking it is a living breathing creature and in a couple of months dont want it anymore. They should walk away in the first place. A lot of animals go to shelters because owners have to move and renters are not able to have pets. This is another bad thing. If someone has a pet and is proven to be a good animal not tearing anything up (isnt that what deposits are for anyway) why cant they just pay a little extra rent and take it with them. Oh I could go on and I am not trying to get anything going just venting a little. Sorry its so long. Just this topic really gets to me. Their are good and bad to both sides No I do not believe that animals should be put down however sometimes their is no other choices. Tracy |
