1.6 lb. Yorkie suddenly eating A LOT - please help! Lolo is 4 months old and about 1.6 lbs. She has been in for a check-up with her vet in the past 3 weeks and was healthy and happy. I have noticed in the last week or so that is eating a considerable amount more food. I usually feed her about 3 times a day and she nibbles when she wants in between. However, she is now inhaling her food so fast that every time I put food down she eats it. She is now eating about 6 times a day. Is this normal for a growing puppy or is this a sign of a health problem? If anyone has any info I would greatly appreicate it. Thanks!!!

They can go through growth stages where they eat A TON of food...personally I'm a scheduled feeder. Mine are fed 2 or 3 times a day (depending on where we've been, if they got treats, if there's only one with me, etc.) for 30 mins to an hour, then I take away the food. Some people leave it out all day, which I've heard helps them to eat less because they nibble a little at a time and then play to burn off the calories...versus them eating a whole bowl 3 (or 6...lol) times a day and then falling asleep and keeping all the fat in them. Mine don't really have problems with that because they're both super active. I think 6 times a day is a little too much though...you don't want her to be overweight as that can cause significant health problems. Someone here may know more than me about this, but I've never heard of a health problem where they started eating too much...but rather I would think eating less or not eating at all would be much more serious. My advice is to feed her 3 times a day (morning, afternoon, evening) and give her a low calorie snack or two in between meals if she's hungry. Also make sure she gets plenty of exercise. If you can't walk her or she doesn't like to walk, just play with her inside actively for at least 30 mins a couple times a day. Last edited by EmrldShdwQueen; 10-22-2007 at 07:26 AM.

She eats about a 1/5 of a cup each time - so maybe around a cup a day. She is a tiny little thing, so usually only eats about 1/2 - 1/3 cup a day, which the vet said is fine. She is growing as she should be, this is just such a sudden increase!!

Oh and Maddie and Sophie have recently fallen in love with the Egg and Cheese Charlee Bear treats...and they're only 3 calories a piece and really small...so they can chew them easily!

That's not too bad...I wouldn't worry...just watch her to make sure she's not getting overweight and maybe try to condense it down to 3 times a day instead of 5 or 6. (Give her 1/3 of a cup instead of 1/5 of course)

she is young i dont think you should worry too much! they usually say let pups eat as much as they want i am a scheduled feeder to an extent because when i put their food down if they dont eat it all it will stay down there till they are ready to eat it. then at night i will put one more bowl down and do they same. portioned food of course.

| Don't think there is anything to worry about. Pups are usually allowed to eat as much as they want coz they need it as they grow.
