Our gal began her first heat on Wednesday of last week. It's now Sunday and it seems to be abetting. Is that about right?

I believe and I'm not expert. It's seven days in, seven days bleeding, and seven days out.

I have always heard from breeders that they can get pregnant even after they seem to have stopped bleeding so you should keep them away from any males for a full month.

Why don't you post your question in the Breeders section? Maybe you'll get your answer. If not, I'd call your vet.

Your probably right there but being new to small dogs and female's at that I have lots of questions that may make the vet feel I am a pain. Sooo.. something as benign as this can be gotten through with a little friendly input from other Yorkie affectionados. (I hope) If for nothing more then another opinion.
