Extended Heat Hey, I just thought I would ask your guys opinions. Cecilia started her first heat bleed on Nov 16th and it has lightened but she is still bleeding. I asked her vet about it and he tested a swab from her vulva and said she is just having a long heat because there is nothing wrong with her swab tests. This was on Friday. Today I called just to ask them at what point I should get worried because she is bleeding a little heavier since yesterday. I spoke to a differrent vet and she told me that she had actually been discussing Cecilia with the other vet because it was odd. She says that it is worrisome because she could become anemic or have something wrong with her uterine lining. Anyway if she hasn't stopped bleeding by tomorrow she wants me to bring her in for blood tests. Has anyone had experience with unusually long bleeds with their girls?

I took Cecilia to a new vet today and he put her on antibiotics. So I have to give her antibiotics twice a day for the next 7 days. If she hasn't stopped bleeding by then, well then I guess we are going back for bloodwork and maybe an ultrasound. She doesn't seem at all bothered physically she just is still bleeding. We are now on day 30. I'm sure glad I don't have month long periods.

Hope she's ok - do let us know. Over here it is common practice not to spay until after the first season - this is when we had Gypsy Rose done and also when Gizzie Chavi will be spayed too. I even phoned our vet to ask if she could be spayed before her season but the answer was a firm no! SOME vets here do spay earlier now but it is not usual. Gypsy Rose was 11 months when she started her season so I may be in for a long wait!! Hugs to your little girl but sure she'll be fine.
