| Lead And Other Metals Found In Wal-Mart Pet Toys Expertox, a Texas lab, has found elevated levels of lead, chromium, and cadmium in two Chinese-made pet toys sold at Wal-Mart. But two veterinarians said the levels found by the lab are not a health risk to cats and dogs. The lab was hired by ConsumerAffairs.com to test two dog toys and two cat toys for heavy metals and other toxins. A dog chew toy, a green monster, tested positive for what the lab categorizes as high levels of lead and chromium. The lab detected lead levels of 907.4 micrograms per kilogram (almost one part per million). Chromium was found at levels of 334.9 micrograms per kilogram. Levels of cadmium, arsenic and mercury were also found in the green monster toy. The lab said with that kind of concentration, if a dog puts the toy in his mouth and chews or licks it, he is being exposed to a good amount of lead and runs the risk of metal toxicity that may shorten his life. Expertox said a cloth catnip toy also tested positive for a tremendous amount of the toxic metal cadmium. The levels of cadmium found were 236 micrograms per kilogram. Two other Wal-Mart pet toys were analyzed, a cloth hedgehog for dogs and a plastic dumbbell toy for cats. Expertox found cadmium in those two pet toys, but the lab toxicologist said the levels found were similar to the amount in one cigarette and not considered significant. | Unfortunately, I saw this coming. So sad. And they only tested two toys? Oh boy, here we go again.

| Looks like we start making the toys too! Mine won't play with them but I buy tons for gifts and such. I do agree that maybe we shouldn't buy anything else made in China. So sad. |

| Thanks for posting this. I just received it via an "itchmo" alert, and was about to do the same thing. I am just getting angrier and angrier over these tainted products coming out of China. Seriously, when are we going to see SEVERE repercussions/restrictions coming out of all of this??? Do these manufacturers have NO twinge of conscience whatsoever????? They seem to entitle themselves to poison both children, adults and animals alike (as long as they could get away with it)!!

| I'd suggest everybody check their babies toys...MANY...bought at Pet Stores were also made in China, not just Walmart. Believe me, I am no fan of Walmart, but I really thought the more expensive toys bought at PetsMart or Pet Co would be safer...still "Made In China"...I'm disgusted.

| I can't even find many toys made in the USA. I can find some not made in China, but most are made in China and the rest are made elsewhere. One would hope that the higher end products would have quality standards that need to be met. Most of the problem we are hearing about are coming from the 99c toys at walmart, the baby bibs from the $1 store... I agree it could happen anywhere, but I despise Walmart so that makes me even more mad.
