| Advice My Baby is so Sick I posted about a week ago because bucky lost his balance and I received great info. Well Friday Bucky started having diarrhea and has been feeling really bad. I took him into the the vet this morning. She gave him medicine for Giardia. I am reading up to learn more about.I told her I would like some blood work to rule out liver shunt but she said he doesnt really show any signs of having a liver shunt and wants to wait. What should I feed him to calm his belly down. The little guy cant keep anything in. I tried pumkin this morning but he will not eat it. The doctor said he might be getting dehydrated. I am really pushing liquid on him. I could not stand a night away from him if he had to have IV fluids. I am sorry for rambling but I am so worried and not sure what to do. Any advice any of you can give me would be greatly appreciated and if he has Giardia how long before he gets feeling better. |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | My dogs will not eat pumpkin either. I did the chicken and rice for diarrhea. Also maybe try cottage cheese and that works on picky eaters sometimes. Hopefully someone else will have more info.

| I'm sorry your baby is so sick. You could try mashed potatoes or plain yogurt. I would stick to a bland diet until the diarreah stops. Boiled chicken and rice is good. Also, you can give him fat free, low sodium chicken broth to help with dehydration. I would have some Pedialyte on hand and try to get him to drink water. If he won't drink on his own, try putting water or Pedialyte in a medicine syringe and giving it to him that way. You can get them for free at most drug stores if you ask.

| Sorry, I can't help you out on that score. Why don't you try posting on the sick and injured emergency talk as well. This way more people might reach you. Hope your baby gets well soon. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Poor baby! When mine have been sick like that the vet can give them subcutaneous fluids. They but a bunch of water under the skin on the back of the neck and its absorbs into their system. It only takes the vet a few minutes to do and it will prevent dehydration

| He did eat about a teaspoon of cottage cheese. I tried some chicken broth but he would not touch it which shocked me because that is his favorite. I am going to try mashed potatoes next. Thank you |

| Sorry your baby is so sick. Giardia is a mess. I had it for two months before they figured out what it was. I'd say give her mild things like chicken and rice, cottage cheese, etc.

| If your baby is getting dehydrated, a simply sub-Q fluid injection will help lots. The vet should have given him that when you were there. If need be, use a syringe and give 1-2 CC's of Pedialyte every hour or so. Giardia can be a bugger to get rid of. Everything your pup comes in contact with needs to be disinfected with a solution of 10% bleach. Make sure to wash the water and food dishes really well each day also. Sometimes the medication will make them anorexic, so keep working on whatever you can get him to eat. Usually, once on meds for about 24 hours you should see firmer stools. Giardia is pretty contagious to other animals and can be contracted by humans, so no doggie kisses for a while. Giardia is a parasite that is spread through infected feces, primarily carried by birds. It is helpful to wipe your pup's feet when coming in from outside, whether pottying, playing or on a walk. Baby wipes are your best friend here. I also use them to wipe the hiney after pottying. Good luck with your little guy!!!

| I think when they are sick we can try too many different things. My vet says yogurt or cottage cheese. They will always eat cottage cheese and have never thrown it up. |

| Bucky has been eating just cottage cheese and some dry life cereal. He is keeping it in him. I agree that to many things probably would make his tummy upset. I am going to add some rice and chicken tonight. |

| buckys mom, just so you know...If you decide to check your baby for liver shunt, make sure that you ask specifically for a Bile Acid Test..Regular bloodwork won't necessarily show a liver problem.
