| pulling baby teeth at spay? My vet recommended that Tia have any remaining baby teeth pulled when she gets spayed (which is in two weeks). We are going in for bloodwork this afternoon. My concern is that she has not lost any of her baby teeth yet! I can understand if she started losing them and they wanted to pull out whatever was left.....but I would hate for them to pull ALL of her teeth out next week! Poor Tia! I can't imagine how uncomfortable that might be! I'm going to ask the vet what she thinks, but should I just let them go ahead with it? Should I insist that we wait for another time? What have been your experiences with baby teeth?

| I had Autumns puppy teeth (10 of them) pulled when she was being spayed. They had not fallen out by themselves. I was more concerned about having to put her under a second time. If they could do it all at once I figured that would be better for everyone. She did great......came home and ate hard food. I dont regret it at all. Good luck w/your decision. |

| How old is Tia? If she hasn't started getting in any of her adult teeth, I would DEFINATELY hold off on getting her baby teeth pulled. I waited until my yorkies were about 10 months old and let the ones fall out on their own that were going to fall out and had the remaining ones pulled. By then, all their adult teeth are in. Personally, if I were you, I would wait to get her baby teeth pulled if her adults have not started coming in yet. |

| Tia is about 5.5 months old. Poor little bugger...if she goes through with this she will go around all gummy! Since she hasn't lost a single baby tooth yet who knows when her adult teeth will come in! I appreciate your responses and if any one else wants to put in their 2 cents it would be great.

| Gizzie had recessive baby teeth, they wouldnt fall out on their own and her big girl teeth were in also so she had 2 rows of teeth. The vet pulled hers out while she was being spayed but if she didnt have any other teeth i dont think i would want them too b/c how is she gonna chew? but also there is a very good chance when your baby;s teeth do come in they will be recessive also, heard it's veeery common in yorkie's and i would worry about being put under twice also. Very hard decision but i know you will do the right thing. could you possibly wait a month or two before you do the surgery to see how her teeth are going to grow in?? |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | I researched this quite a bit and have 2 cases for you..... Bella was also 6 months and I had 9 teeth (remaining baby teeth) when spayed. She is fine and perfect teeth. Actually ate kibble the next day! I took that away and went with soft food recommendation for 2 days... My sisters yorkie Ada, (Bella's sister) did not have baby teeth pulled when spayed....they waited for them to fall out. Her breath stunk BAD, she acted sickly and she bled all over everything trying to get these teeth out. The stink was rotten food and infection in her gums. She then had to be put under a second time to have them removed....Same exact thing happened to another litter mate who waited. We were told this infection can do damage to permanent teeth and there is no reason to leave baby teeth in. I suppose its up to you I would ponder this.... She is already under, your reducing chances of infection, your reducing chances of damage to adult teeth.... I could be totally wrong. Just wanted to share my own experiance with this situation. Hope this helps!

| So we went to the vet and since there are no signs of adult teeth emerging yet the decision has been made to postpone her blood analysis for 3 weeks from now and her spay to 4 weeks from now. They said that if at anytime I can see an adult tooth pushing through at a particular place in her gum (she pointed out where to look) I could give them a call to ask for an earlier appointment. So...it in the end, it's better to wait and have her go under as few times as possible. Tia was happy that this was just a friendly visit, and we learned that at almost 6 months she weighs a wopping 5 pounds! Thanks for your input!
