| Royal Canin and Otis By posting this message, my intent is not to cause frenzy or alarm anyone but to inform you of what we've been through the past month. Three weeks ago, I opened a brand-new bag of Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Mix, the giant-sized one. I mixed in some boiled mashed chicken livers I bought in the meat department at Safeway's just to make it even tastier for Otis. I had been feeding this mix to Otis for about three days when I noticed he had really bad-smelling gas. The next day he had extremely soft stool, which eventually turned to diarrhea. I stopped the liver, thinking it was too rich, but continued with the Royal Canin. Shortly afterwards, Otis began vomiting (not yellow frothy bile stuff we're all used to), but orange and pink, which indicated to me he had internal bleeding somewhere. We rushed him to the vet. She tested his feces and said he had colitis, and most likely it was from Otis not being able to handle the liver because of his sensitive stomach. She put him on antibiotics and the bland diet of cottage cheese/rice/chicken. At that time, we asked her if the Royal Canin could have also been the culprit. Since the livers and the new bag of RC were introduced at the same time, it was hard to tell what made him sick. She said it was unlikely, RC was one of the good safe foods, and that her own dogs were on RC. Nevertheless if it made us feel better, we should swap the bag with a new bag, which we promptly did. Otis had been on his bland diet for about a week and a half. Once his stool started hardening up, I introduced a newer bag of Royal Canin. Several days later, he started having the same smelly gas he did when all of this started, and that takes us up to present time today. He has bad gas, seems lazier than normal, and his stool is soft. Today, I hear they have recalled Royal Canin.....but the YT mix is not included on the list. I called Royal Canin and told her my situation. The rep, sounding annoyed, reinforced the issue that the YT mix is unaffected. In my heart, Otis's problems and the Royal Canin seems to be too much of a coincidence, so we've decided Otis will be eating homemade meals for the next few weeks until we figure out what is going on. I might also add that Otis has been eating Royal Canin since he was very small, and has never had a problem with it. |

| If it IS the Royal Canin YT mix, I would expect a lot more Yorkie owners to be posting their dogs' illnesses. I did a search on here and hardly found any, thank God. |

I just posted on another thread about our bad happening last year with Baby Blessing. I honestly now am wondering about the incident of last year. We are now cooking for our two. I just don't trust any of the dog food companies. I just am praying that what I do fix for the little ones will be healthy enough and not cause any problem or diahreaa. Patti Baby Blessing and Dollie Prayers that Otis is doing real good now and that he will be fine. By the way what are you feeding him and do you have any recipes to share. Thank you. | |

| Wow!!!! when i got jersey she was on chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul and i switched her to RC puppy and she wouldnt eat unless she was starving basically. To make a long story short...she was losing weight, had blood drawn and it showed very low kidney function and all her levels were wacked out. the vet said RC is a very good food and didnt believe the food was a problem. he suggested a bile acid test to see exactly what was going on..i agreed and her test came back normal. i changed her food to ceasers (against my wishes with all the by-product in it) but i was desperate to get her to eat...she ate it and ate baby food with no issues. she went in every week after all this to get weighed. they believe it must have been her diet. the breeder suggested putting her back on CS...i ordered wet and dry and she's been eating with no issues and gained 4oz last week. i now truly believe there was an issue with the food and thats why she wasnt eating (it sounds weird but it kind of makes sense to me). Daisy was rushed to the vet because out of no where she had diarreah and vomitting. they asked about her food and i said she's still on RC YT28 and they said it was a very good food. they did blood, had to re-hydrate her etc. i believe this issue was also because of the RC. she is now eating the CS Puppy with Jersey and I've had NO problems with either one. I personally believe it was the RC.

| How scary. I wish I had faith that it wasn't the food doing this to Otis - but I suspect it is and you'll find many more who have had problems as well....

However, I've heard that because the richness of their foods some dogs can not tolerate it.... We're all in panic mode....especially since it's been discovered that the problem may have been intentionally done.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | That is so frighenting. It is even more frightening NOT to know for sure, not to have answers for you, Otis, and others. And, it really ticks me off that you were treated poorly by Royal Canin - they have tainted dog food, for pet's sake, they should be OVERLY patient and attentive to their customers. I'd switch pet foods, if I were you, just for being treated that way!

| Oh My Goodness!!! I signed on tonight to try to find an answer... My little Samson is 20 weeks old and we were given RC when we purchased him at the pet store (he was then 13 weeks). He hasn't really liked it much, so we have been feeding him mainly chicken (canned from Sam's Club). I was worried that he might not be getting enough nutrients & just started mixing in some of his kibble with his chicken. On Sunday he began vomiting, but seemed better by Monday. He had soft stools that then turned to diarrhea (He must have gone 10 times today). I decided to only give him kibble today thinking that might be better for him. He finally ate it when he saw that is all he was going to get. Then tonight he started vomiting again. He is just so sick. I feel so bad for him. I called the emergency veterinary hospital late tonight and they said for me to ONLY feed him chicken in very small quantities with small amounts of water at a time. We travel a lot,as we are in the ministry, so his diet has been a little varied (a burger here and there), but he has never had an issue until now. He is resting now, so that's good anyway... This is my first experience with a puppy (Samson joined our family on June 7th), so I have a lot to learn still, but he is the love of my life. He has been such a Blessing to our family. my heart is sooo sad for him right now. My prayers are with you and your little one also. Thanks for your post! Blessings
