| Natural flea preventatives?? My cocker spaniel (Peppi) is allergic to flea medicine, we have tried all the name brands and she starts scratching all over and chewing, it gets really bad. All the others are on flea medicine and they do fine with but not Peppi. But I don't want fleas ending up in my house, we haven't had any fleas on the dogs or in the house for years and I would like to keep it that way. So what do you recommend for a natural flea preventative?? Of course I am only talking about something you give her orally as I don't really want to spray anything on her. I found this tablet that you give to your dogs and it is suppose to be a flea preventative and it is all natural. Here is what it says: Vita Treat Flea D is a combination of yeast and garlic for safe, all-natural flea defense. These chicken flavored chewable tabs also contain B-Complex Vitamins, Minerals, and Protein to promote a shinier, healthier coat. 180 ct. # All Natural Flea Defense # Great Chicken Flavor # With Vitamins, Minerals & Protein For Coat Health So is the yeast and garlic the only thing keeping the fleas away?? I give Peppi brewers yeast and missing link so woulden't that be the same since she gets the garlic, the yeast and vitamins and minerals for her skin and coat??

| Actually, we swear by "Diatomaceous Earth". I hope I spelled that correctly! It is a powdery substance (it is not chemical-it is the crushed shells of very old fossils) that you can buy at a Nursery (Use the lawn care type NOT the pool type)-we spread it over our entire lawn, patio, deck etc about three time a year (in the warm months). It kills all fleas and other crawling type bugs. You need to wear a mask while spreading it but after that it is safe-farmers add it to feed to control internal worms. Many, many years ago, despite using oral type natural methods for fleas we were just overcome by them-we moved into a house already infested and just could not control them. Someone told us about the DE and it completely got rid of the fleas-inside and out! I felt it was close to miraculous! Since then, that is ALL we use and have never had another flea! Best wishes... |

| Did you spread it using a hose end sprayer or just dry wearing a mask? Thanks, Nancy Quote:

| Hi, The DE is a dry powdery substance that is applied dry-my husband just sprinkles it on right out of the box...it looks pretty white all over when her is done but then sort of works it's way into the grass and you cannot see it. The only reason you need the mask at first is because there is so much of it kind of floating around and since it actually works by piercing the shell of the fleas (gross isn't it?). Those little fossilized shells are sharp and you would NOT want to inhale that into your lungs...after it settles into the yard and other areas then it is fine. I have known people who have used it indoors and even rubbed some into their dog's coat to get rid of an infestation, but all we do is spread it outdoors and we never have to deal with any indoors! Here are a couple websites with more info: http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/pets/835 http://www.hydromall.com/happy_grower16.html |
