Otis chewed a raw spot on his tail. I couldn't figure out if it was his liver problems or allergies. The vet said he was inflammed between his paw pads and that he had hayfever. She put him on hyroxyzine becuase he can't have steroids because of his liver. And an antibiotic for the spot on his tail. He's pretty much all better, but if I miss one day of his allergy pills, he starts in at his tail again.

I thought it was something in the food that was making Brutus itch but it turns out he has seasonal allergies. Once all the pollen is gone so is his scratching.

My poor little baby Dolce has been itching like a NUT for the last month. It's SO sad to see her sit and scratch and scratch incessantly. This happened to her last summer, though, so I'm pretty sure it's just seasonal allergies. It never carries over into fall/winter.

I went to the local feed store and got some holistic, all natural spray that is supposed to soothe the skin. It seems to help a little, but not drastically. As much as it pains me to see her scratch so much, she has no bumps, no redness and no hair loss so I don't want to stick her on anything that could cause further harm. I hope this allergy season ends soon!

put a tshirt on her as it keeps the allergents off her skin and it works for my dd who is severely allergic to environmental things. Also use an air purifier in room and vacuum often. White pillow cases on beds as dyes in beds can make them itchy. Bath her once a week to get the allergents off. when she comes in form outside wipe paws with hypoallergenic huggies baby wipes. The tshirts will help a lot. You are lucky you have winter as we are year round allergy here in california - we take dd to dermatologist and now she has hypothyroid which can cause hairloss and itchiness so make sure to have the t4free done and the whole thyroid panel is best.

I got the test for my baby and was so hoping that was what the problem was but unfortunately it was not. I am now considering Atopica which I am very nervous about, but I think at this point I do not have any other choice. I just thought I would try and help you out, because I hate to hear about all these poor babies suffering. Hope this helps, Good luck! Lexi's Mom
Did they do the full panel for lexi as i privately emailed you too as thyroid is really hard to test so you have to do all the panels and i think you live close enough to garden grove, ca to make the trip to dr. dodd's as atopica is not really working for dd and hair never grew back in 10 months and i went to dr. dodds and she has hypothyroid her thyroid tested fine in 3/06 but now it is not and this is why hairloss and itchiness still even on atopica - i hope this is finally the answer as i have been through the ringer and 5k in bills to finally find out - dr. dodds is the expert on thyroid disease so have vet send to her or if you live close enough go have her do it

Default Atopica

I did a bit of research on Atopica, and it has an effect on the T cells.

The most frequently observed undesirable effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as vomiting, mucoid or soft stool and diarrhea. They are mild and transient and generally do not require the cessation of the treatment. Very rarely (muscle cramps, muscle weakness) anorexia, gingival hypertrophy, veruciform lesions or change of hair coat have been reported. The efficacy and safety of cyclosporine has neither been assessed in dogs aged less than 6 months weighing less than 2 kg nor in breeding dogs or pregnant or lactating bitches. It is recommended to clear bacterial and fungal infections before treatment with ATOPICA. But infections are not necessarily a reason for drug withdrawal if they occur during treatment. As cyclosporine inhibits T-lymphocytes, it may decrease the immune response in case of malignancy. A complete clinical examination should be performed before treatment. Lymphadenopathy observed on treatment with cyclosporine should be regularly monitored.

In contrast to humans, there is no evidence of cyclosporine kidney toxicity and increased blood pressure in dogs.

Various drugs are known to competitively inhibit or induce the enzymes involved in the metabolism of cyclosporin, in particular cytochrome P450 (CyP 3A 4). In clinically relevant cytochrome P450-mediated interactions an appropriate adjustment of ATOPICA dosage might be required. Ketoconazole is the only drug known to lead to a clinically relevant increase of the blood concentration of cyclosporin in dogs.

I use it all the time! If I have a little razor burn, or a liittle nic while grooming I just spray a little P&K on a cotton ball and dab it on and let it dry.
I've also used it on itchy spots and it has helped. It really works! I will order more when I run out. I got the large bottle, so it should last a good while.

I phone-consult w/ an animal nutritionist for Marcel, bc he had such problems post-giardia that NO vet could fix. I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH about how highly I think of her - she is beyond smart and I trust her. She believes in fixing the cause, not just medicating the symptoms - though she always wants to find immed. relief for the dog as well (using natural methods).

I see on her website that she treats a LOT of skin problems/allergies (and there is client feedback, which is always nice). Her name is Susan Blake-Davis and here is her website (click on "specific illnesses to dig further): http://www.askariel.com/

My chihuahua has allergies, so I feed all 3 of mine Natural Balance potato duck and haven't had any problems since I started it about 2 years ago. It is a great food and her coat is much shinier than it use to be too.
