| Eat than Walk? or Walk than Eat? It is starting to get nice here in NY. My plan is to start taking TJ and Roxy out for a brief walk in the morning before I go to work. I want them to get outside more and get some more exercise, BUT I would really like to see if I could get them to both POOP outside in the morning. (Less chance of poop eating - I am trying so hard to stop this). My question is: Do I give them their AM food first and then go for a walk? or Do we go for a walk immediately when we wake up and then comeback and feed them? |

| I think I would do the walk first. Maybe they can't wait til after they eat. somedays mine poop then eat, somedays they eat first. but I would say. most times, they poop first. Mine have free access to the outside via a doggie door. |

| Good point, but in my case, now that I think about it... TJ poops right after eating (I can usually force him to poop and then get to his poop before they do). However, he has NEVER pooped outside - EVER (he is just over 2 years old) Roxy is a different story. Sometimes she will poop first thing in the morning, sometimes right after eating, but for the most part - she will poop 1-2 hours after eating in the AM. If Roxy has to poop and we are outside, she certainly will. I guess I might have to try both ways and see what is best for us! |

| I let mine out side first, they run out, pee, and come back in. Then I feed them and wait a little while. I let them out again and they poo. I think when they eat it kind of triggers the bowels. So you might want to take them out briefly to pee, them bring them in and feed them, then go for that walk. JMHO Nancy

| The ideal is to feed an hour after a long walk or walk an hour after feeding, but with you folks who don't have that much time because of work, I would suggest feeding after the walk as long as they are not overly hot and tired. |

| It's not easy when you have to go to work in the am but it is a responsibility that has to be met or how will they ever get housebroken? Since I bought Buddy I get up 1/2 hr earlier. 6:00am and into sweats and out we go. He gets fed and then played with for 1/2 hr before I get ready for work. He gets walked again at 8:00am and I am out by 8:20 the latest. Yes, it is alot of work but Buddy is completely trained and has been since he was 5mos. I am only 13mi to work but cross a major bridge and at times sit in bumper to bumper traffic. It's worth it in the end because I have a great pet. I would certainly walk them first, feed, play and walk again. Good luck, |

| Poop vs. Eat Bogey gets up every morning at 5 a.m. with us & goes outside to pee & poop. He's 14 months old & the key to getting them to poop is walking. If you know he needs to go ,then you walk until he goes. Bogey poops twice a day, in the morning and again in the late afternoon. He eats approx. one time a day (at night) If I've called him to come inside in the mornings, he knows he needs to poop before he comes inside & will take an extra minute to go do that before he comes in. I think the main thing is routine. Make sure what you do is consistant.

| Agree I agree with alriver. We feed out little one at approx. the same time everyday(+/- 1hr). He does his #2 about the same time everyday. It becomes very predictable. So routine is the key. We usually feed him 1st before going out, in the AM since if we didn't he would try to eat everything he finds on the ground (yuck)!

| I just watched the dog whisperer, and yes he does say that they have to work for their food... so walk first... but in the mornings, my baby poops and pees first thing (before food) then comes back to eat... She's pretty weird, cuz she won't poop after eating.. maybe an hour after eating... is that strange??

| Thanks everyone. I am leaning towards: Get up and walk them first, then feed them and get myself ready and go to work. They do really go poop after eating, but they may just learn to go poop outside on our walk, and if not, I know they will be good and ready to poop (on the pad) after they eat breakfast. |
