You probably already know but thought I would throw this out in case anyone was comparing protein percetages between canned and dry dog foods. We can't directly compare them. We have to convert the canned/wet to a dry protein percentage. For instance:

Canidae canned has 9% Protein but has 78% Moisture. So, it has 22% dry content -- divide that by the 9% and you get a dry protein equivalent of 24% -- on the high side for adults (goal 18%) and just a tad low for puppies (goal 28%). That is why they can all eat it. They figure puppies can just eat a little more and still get there protein requirements.

Another thing to consider is the digestibility of the protein source. All protein sources are not created equally.

The only thing about the Canidae canned (which I am using too) is that we are paying for that 78% moisture content -- water. I feed mine half and half -- mixed with the dry. They also have dry out all the time. I have been using the Chicken Soup for Puppies Lover's Soul for the dry.

It IS hard to not give in, I know. What I do, is just give nutrical during the times she won't eat. I have been told that a healthy dog will not starve itself when food is available. I even do no treats or anything. I believe three days is when she first started eating MOST of her food, but it was a couple of weeks before the schedule really got her to eat it ALL nearly all times food was placed before her. Once in a while, she will not finish her food, but then the next day, she eats it all.

Well....I couldn't help myself from doing it. I just had to try again. I used the dry food, put it in the blender and powdered it. Mixed it with water. Fed her some from a spoon which she ate, (suspiciously, I might add) then I had to....get this!!...put it on the floor instead of a dish so she would eat it.

I can top that. I have even...omg, I can't believe I am going to admit this...gotten on the floor and acted like I was gonna eat her food (even got DH to do it LOL) to get her to go over and eat it.
And before you get on that floor and give it a try (LOL) it only worked the first few times. After that, she was like..."mom, you and I both know you're not gonna eat that"

40 pounds is still probably too large a quantity unless you have a lot of Yorkies, but I guess 30 days is better then 14.
Thank you so much, I guess all my gang will be eating it-golden retriever, lab and yorkie..and maybe the cat..lol.

My lab puppy and 2 yorkies all eat Canidae All Life Stages. It is hands down the best dog food on the market, in my opinion. :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:

Do you use canned, dry, or both? Any problem with the dry's shelf-life? How long for the 3 to get through a bag of dry of what size? Sorry for the inquisition but I want to order some dry. I have been feeding the Canidae canned with Chicken Soup dry.

I'm not a fan of the Canidae Wet or Chicken Soup dry because both contain Barley. A substantial percentage of dogs are allergic to wheat and other grains such as barley and rye so I stear clear of all foods and treats that contain wheat, barley, or rye. If your dogs aren't showing any signs of allergies (dry skin, head shaking, biting feet, ear infections), then the Canidae Wet and Chicken Soup dry are excellent choices. However, I only like the Chicken Soup PUPPY formula. The Adult formula has too many fillers and many more grains in it. The PUPPY formula is actually an All Life Stages formula and can also be fed to adult dogs.

The place where I get my dog food has been out of the 20lb bag so I've been buying two 5lb bags of Canidae and with my 3, it lasts me 2 - 2.5 weeks.

I feed Canidae Lamb & Rice dry with the occasional Merrick Wingaling canned. (One big can lasts for 3 dinners). I feed Loki 1/4 cup twice a day of the dry food. One 5lb bag takes about 6 weeks to go through. He is about 11 lbs. Does that help at all?

I love Canidae but their canned food smells icky. Sorry but I've never seen a canned food that beats Wingaling. :D

It is the Chicken Soup puppy formula I am using. I did not realize it is an all stages food. That is actually what I am wanting. I have 2 pups, one young adult, and a senior. No way to keep them all out of each others food. So, all stages works best. The Canidae Lamb and Rice Canned does not contain barley. I have also used the Chicken and Rice canned and it does contain barley -- Thankfully, I have not seen a problem with allergies with it.

My crew also liked the Diamond Small Breed Puppy food -- but I know many are against the Diamond brand because of the tainted food over a year ago. It also had barley in it. My favorite pick was Innova -- but they don't seem to like it. I even mixed it in their other kibble and the little triangles were left in the bowl. It is hard to find a premium food that all 4 like, is suitable, and I can find locally. The Canidae is available a good 45-60 minutes away from me. I ordered the last case from Petfooddirect.

The Chicken Soup Puppy says on the bag that it's suitable for All Life Stages. I emailed Chicken Soup to confirm this and they said it was correct...it is suitable for all life stages. If your guys are doing well on it and you can buy it locally, I would stick with that. I checked out the ingredients in the Canidae Lamb & Rice canned and all the ingredients are perfect to me! If this food combo is working well for you, then I would just stick with it.
