Pregnant Yorkie 5 Attachment(s) Has anyone had expierience with a pregnant dog. My yorkie is pregnant by a maltese. How do I know when she is going to give birth. I heard you can feel the puppy's moving at 8 weeks. I feel some movement in her belly so I think the pups are coming soon. Also do yorkie's get a big belly when pregnant? My yorkie's belly hasn't gotten as big as I thought it would. She was a skinny dog to begin with. Most yorkie's I've seen are like that but still healthy. She stays in her kennel sleeping most of the time. She's become quite lazy. Which is one of the side effects of being pregnant. Dogs can become quiet, lazy ,or affectionate during pregnancy. If anyone has some advice please let me know. Thanks alot!!!! PS I posted some pics of yorkie/maltese mixes. Very Cute :) |
Welcome to our little community! I'm sorry I don't have any experience breeding at all, but quite a few members here have. I just wanted to mention how cute those mixes are! :) |
Hi LovelyYorkie i just had a litter of pup's they will be 6 weeks old tommorrow. I knew the day my dogs "tied" so i could guess pretty close to when she was going to have them dogs are pregnate for 60-65 if i remember correctly. My Jasmine only gained 1 pound and she had 3 babies you couldnt even tell she was going to have babies. i'm not a breeder tho this was an accident i have since had my male fixed. (both yorkies) and my female will be fixed soon also. There is a breeder here Kindness_001 hopefully she will pop in with more advice. by the way cute pictures. |
Welcome to YT, LovelyYorkie. Hope you enjoy it here! Your babies are gorgeous! In the words of Prissy in Gone With the Wind ... "I don't no nothin' 'bout birthin' no babies"!! But there are those on our forum who certainly do!! Ladies and Gentlemen?!?? :D |
ohhh those mixes are the cutes! I wants one XD |
Toto's Mom, that quote from Gone With The Wind just cracked me up. I recently just watched this movie so the visual in my mind is perfectly clear, ha ha. I unfortunately don't know a thing either about pregnant Yorkies or such either. However what beautiful pic's!!! |
I was told the best way to know when a dog is close to birthing is when their temperature begins to drop from the normal 101 degrees. Usually 99 or 98 degrees. :) They also begin to nest shortly before they deliver. |
The pregnant bitch's teats will swell during the last few days, preparing her to nurse her pups. My dogs always became restless during the last 12 hours, before whelping, but I had big dogs. Not sure how small dogs do! The mixes are DARLING and I am a big fan of outcrosses since I have a Dachshund/Poodle outcross, and I've never had a smarter, healthier dog. Welcome to YorkieTalk! It will be fun to see pictures of your pups! :) |
birth Hi Can you recall when you bred your female? It takes 9 weeks..they can give birth from 57 to 65 as a rule, but most go 61/63 days. I had a litter born at 56 days, but that is not the norm. Is it possible for you to get her vet checked. Your vet can xray and tell how many pups. It is always best to have a vet check when you have a pregnant dam. she should be eating puppy food for the extra calories and calcuim..do not give her a calcuim suppliment before birthing. Give her a bit of cottage cheese each day. As a rule right before whelping they stop eating, some vomit, nest by digging the bedding, temp drops. The milk usually come abotu 5 days before..all are different though. Make sure she has a bed with heat. I place a heating pad under the bed, not in it. Please let us know how it all turns out..best of luck to you and your mommy dog. |
Thank heavens! Pat is the Voice of Experience here! :D |
Yup that is all right and they are all different with the milk part and teats swelling. Just the other day I was around a chihuahua for 4 days before she gave birth and she didnt produce milk nor did her teats swell until the first pup was born. The only way I knew she was REALLY close was with the nesting, panting, restlessness and her temperature dropped to 98 degrees. She got false contractions the day before which were not as strong as the REAL thing, I read that it is when the pups are getting in their places. I had purchased a book on breeding which I didn't let go during the birth of the pups. "The Complete Book Of Dog Breeding," By Dan Rice, D.V.M. Excellent book with alot of info. ;) |
pregnancy Good book..also my favorite is Canine Reproduction by Phyllis A. Holst, MS, DVM Bitches are not easy to prodict, but knowing the time they were bred narrows it down. Many people can not tell the difference in a 7 week gestation and one ready to whelp in a day or so. The best thing to do is not leave her alone. Some of mine are so predictable, then out of the blue they will whelp early with little signs of labor...makes it sooo much fun! LOL |
I want an update on the soon to be Mom :D |
Me too!! Like I told Mary Ellen, "I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies"!! But, hat's off to those of you that do! I would be mortified!! |
I'm new to this site. And I was hoping that some of you that are experienced with Yorkies and pregnancy can help. My yorkie's name is Bell. I mated her on Oct 29th. I brought her to the vet today, because I think she might be pregnant(actually hoping that she is) Bell has been very lazy lately, Not playing, she had a bout with morning sickness where she would throw up bile. Her belly isn't getting any bigger but I thought her teats(nipples) were protruding a little. But when we went to the vet today the vet said that her mamoray glands were not swollen, and that she would need an x-ray. Has anyone had this happen to them and then find out their dog was pregnant?? And does any one know how much this is going to cost me, I of course did not ask! And being around Christmas time I don't need another expensive bill. I would be grateful for any help. Oh by the way if she is pregnant she would deliver around New Years!! :) |
