Marrow bones ???

I bought some beef marrow bones at the store for my Sparky. I've boiled them and gotten all the meat and fat off it them, but I'm not sure how much of the marrow to dig out and how to know if it's marrow I'm shaving off or pieces of bone? I've read these are safe for our babies, and I'm wanting to make sure I'm doing it right. Can someone tell me if I'm doing the right thing and if I've cleaned them enough?

I'm really glad you posted this because I've seen so many different answers. When I had Shepherds we would give them raw meaty bones but were told to NEVER boil or cook the bones as they can splinter. They had amazing teeth.

I too would love to give Lucy marrow bones but have been hesitant because I don't know if there is a reason eveyone seems to be cooking the bones?

i've also read not to boil them and i know that it is ok if they have a bit of marrow on them still.. .i have some for Layla in the freezer that i'l give her some day.... when i remmeber... lol... and they have marrow on them still and i know that that's ok... hopefully someone can give you a definite answer because i too am a bit confused

I feed the bones from beef shanks. I have the butcher cut the shanks 3/4" to 1" thick. I use the shank to make beef soup and then clean the bone and give them to the furkids.

Marrow is good for the dogs. I just wouldn't let them have too much at one time, it might cause a gastro-intestinal upset.

I too have 2 Germans, and yes I give them RAW bones from the butcher shop. I never boil them. And their teeth are very frightening!! (check out the funny pic in my photo album! hehe!) However, I see them as bodyguards for me and my lil one! They can puncture basketballs with those K9's!! Very scary!! I don't know about giving these bones, even partial pieces to Destiny. What if she cracks a tooth? All her baby ones haven't even fallen out!! She looks like jaws! And THAT'S frightening because vet says they will have to be pulled and soon!

So what's the consensus?? I'm not sure what to do?!?!?!?

I boil the beef marrow and knuckle bones first. They do NOT splinter after cooking. The marrow is in the middle of the bone and is very, very soft, and easy to push out. NO need to scrape. The marrow is a VERY fatty part and can cause diarrhea. The don't need that fat. They just need to chew on something they love and can't eat.
