For male dogs it's reccomended to neuter by six months of age. This will prevent the lifting of the leg and marking. For females they suggest to wait a little longer, so that if the pup retains her baby teeth then they can be pulled at the time of spaying. Elaine.

Abby was just spayed this past Monday, she's 5 months old and weighs 7 lbs. She also had dew claws removed at the same time.I did not want her to go into heat, since if you spay before first heat the chances of cancer are lower. I use a holistic recipe against heart worm, i dont want to pump her full with pestisides.

I studied the life cycle of the heartworm/mosquitoe and until we have temps consistantly above 54 or so degrees (30 days without a break), I'll keep them off heartworm meds. Of course all the VETs recommend year round and I don't blame them. Why go through an education class when its much easier (and perhaps safer for the dog) to just go with year round.

Canela was spayed this week at 7.5 months. She also had 5 puppy teeth removed. 3 of which were impacted. It was probably tougher on me than her. Recovery is going well but she wants to lick the wound. That bitter apple ointment seems to work or else she minds when she is told 'no'.

| YorkieTalk Newbie! | My vet has recommended to have Disney neutered at 6 months too so he will be done in October and judging by how he is already with his Teddy Bear I think it will be good to do this soon! |

Interceptor, its made 2-10 lbs. It's the only one that actually states a size this small. Heartworm prevention is one of the best investments to make with your yorkie. They are both good, as long as you give it like clockwork. Any one of them will be effective. I've never seen or heard of any issues from this one of Heatguard. Even if they don't live in a place that people think are exempt, like they use potty pads. Give them the medication. It's not worth the risk. Boys 6-7 months. No longer Girls this is trickier because you fight the clock to do it. 9 months. You want to get it done before they go into season.
