looking for some warm weather advice! Hi. This December we will be taking Layla on her first REAL trip to Florida for two weeks. We are renting a house so i don't have to worry about the whole "hotel" thing, however, living in Ontario we haven't really had hot days to worry about. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for warm weather, but i'm worried about how the temperature will affect my baby. Anyone in Florida with advice?? I know the basics of keeping cold fresh water... and there will be a pool to cool her off in, but what should i look for to know she is not dealing well with the heat?

When my 2 get really warm, they pant alot. It's 68 out right now, and they love it.Cold front came through last night. It's been in the 80's & 90's so they stay indoors quite a bit. We are now able to take them for walks, the pavements cooled off. I hope it warms back up to high 70's & low 80's soon. I've been freezing all day today. Your main concern down here is to watch for fire ants. Your babies step into one of their mounds, & your vacation will be over. Hope you have a good time down here.

Fireants will have a mound usually of sand. Once they bite it festers up with blisters & itches. Leaving scars. You just barely step on the mound and they come out in hundreds attacking. I saw a small dog step into a mound once, it started yelping in pain. We get our yard treated for them several times a year. I've stepped in them different times not watching where I was walking. They attack so fast, it's horrible. I've still got scars on my legs from them. There are several web sites on fireants. I think they are the worst thing down here.

I'm in south AL, and we have fire ants here too. If you have ants where you are....they look a lot alike except fire ants are a lot bigger in size. Mounds look pretty similiar, except for the colors. Not sure what part of FL your going to, but I know the uppper part...usually cool to 75 in the day. I dont' think you will have much worrry about the heat this time of the year. But glad pipersmommy mentioned fire ants. I know many parts don't have these like we do in the south.
