'Gagging' all the time My 11-week-old tea-cup yorkie, Pippin, has been 'gagging' a lot since we got him. We took him to the vet and she said it was common for toy breeds to have breating problems. Later on we took him back and she diagnosed him with broncitus and we gave him one Amoxil a day. It still hasn't improved. He still acts normal, runs etc but I'm still worried. I'm wondering if this is very common and if it goes away because I'm considering taking him to another vet and demand they take X-Rays of his lungs.

The breathing problem for Yorkies and other small breeds is in their very delicate tracheas, the breathing tube that goes down their throat to the lungs. The cartilage can collapse and cause great difficulties. If that is the problem, medications and sometimes surgery can help. There is also something call "reverse sneezing" that sounds just like this but ISN'T harmful. When Higgins was a baby, he developed a gagging problem that turned out to be very swollen tonsils. Some nice butterscotch flavored liquid antibiotic from the vet took care of those tonsils nicely and stopped the gagging. If, after a couple of days, it hasn't improved, I would most certainly take him to a vet who treats many small breed dogs and is familiar with the trachea problems they are subject to. I hope Pippin improves! Please DO keep us posted. Hugs from Higgins and me...

If you use a collar on him, that can damage his trachea; so don't use a collar, instead use a halter; jerry

2nd opinion Pippins Mom....the tracheal problem is very common......and not easily treated.....but I agree that you should get a 2nd opinion....to rule out some other problem......I understand that tracheal collapse is usually only periodic not constant.....if it is frequent and/or constant....it is probably something else. Hope Pippin is better soon. Max and Maggies' mom

Thanks for the info : ) About the halter, we got one but even the smallest one is too big for him and that's when we made it as tight as possible so we have no choice but to use a collar though we never pull it and it's very loose so I don't think that's the problem. I have heard about the trachea problem which makes me worried :s

When Higgins was a little baby, we used vest halters that fasten with velcro.....There are several sites that sell them..... http://ziggysboutique.homestead.com/halters.html I still have his first tiny little one and can't believe he was ever that small to wear it!

When Rudy was little he wanted to go with us when we walked, so I got a cat harness, leash all in one. I got it at Petco for under $ 6 dollars. I have also heard of people using ferret harnesses too...............Cindy

UPDATE: I took Pippin to the vets yesturday and they did a few X-Rays and thankfully, his heart and lungs are fine. The vet took some blood samples and will call us with the results but she says it most likely isn't serious : D
