| Possible Heart Murmur Hi everyone, I originally post this on BiewerTalk but didn't get many responses so I thought that hopefully I could get some input here. I just recently joined and enjoy reading and learning through these posts. I have a concern, if anyone can share some input. I just recently purchased a male biewer yorkie from a breeder in PA. He's now 12 weeks old and a feisty little character. Yesterday, I took him for his full physical exam and third round of shots and the vet commented on hearing a heart murmur. He asked if the breeder had mentioned it to me and I replied with a surprised NO. I guess when seeing the shocked look on my face, he tried to ease my nerves by saying that he only really hears it when the puppy is excited but when he holds him and he's calm, he doesn't hear it. He said that he would keep an eye out on it and also said that they 'usually' grow out of it. Now...am I jumping the gun by being overly concerned or should I be? I had a yorkie 1o years ago who had a heart murmur. I purchased him from a pet store( didn't know about puppy mills back then). He died within a few months from complications of his heart and I was heartbroken. It has taken me this long to finally want another dog. And now this...deja vu! I was hoping to breed at a later time but don't know if I should now. I paid the higher price for full breeding rights and registration docs so the breeder was aware of my future plans of the puppy. I have sent the breeder an email but she hasn't responded. Should I be concerned of this heart murmur? Also, does the health guaranty contract cover this kind of defect? Thanks for any responses, Nita |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | You may want to get a consultation with a cardiologist and see what they say. Also, contact the breeder again. Good luck.

| Hmm.. You did the right thing contacting the breeder about it. Do you have a copy of the health guarantee? Some breeders have it posted on their websites. I would think it varies from breeder to breeder. I'm sorry that this is happening to you again! Your vet didn't sound too worried about it, so hopefully your puppy will be just fine. And I'm not a breeder so I have no clue as to what to do there. I do know that it takes quite some time to determine whether or not a dog is breedable. P.S. I know some of us here love Biewers.. Can you post a picture of your new baby? Pretty please?

| Hi Nita, welcome to YT. Max is adorable. I have a Biewer too. When I took him to his first visit with my vet they heard a murmur (Grade 1 out of 6, 1 being mild). Like your vet, at that point, they weren’t that concerned. Apparently, it is not all that uncommon in young puppies and often they do grow out of them. I think it is by around six months of age. At Gus' next vet visit, a few weeks later, they could not detect the murmur. He is now two years old and I have had all three of his vets listen very carefully (overprotective owner but they are great about it) every time I've brought him in. They assure me his heart is healthy. Since it sounds like your vet's response was a lot like my vet's it could turn out to be nothing or a mild murmur that he could live with to old age. I do not know if he is suitable for breeding even if he does grow out of it. Hopefully, someone else can give you some insight on that. Best of luck.

| Well, I finally spoke with the breeder and she said that it was odd that her vet hadn't caught it and mine did. It may very well go away and it may very well not. I did a 'wait and see' with my last puppy and I'm just afraid to go through it all again. I've had this puppy for all of two weeks and now I may have to go to a cardiologist to determine if the murmur is congenital or not and what exactly is causing it? I can't even really enjoy having him. I am so disappointed and sad. In any case, I will have the vet to check him again in addition to receiving his vaccinations and I will go from there. Thanks to everyone who has responded. Nita |

| If you don't mind me asking, what did the breeder say about taking the pup back? A decent breeder would take back a puppy with a heart defect. Or is that not something you want to do?

I hope no one takes this the wrong way but I very much want to give the puppy back. While he's still young and I'm not so VERY attached. She can sell him as a pet only if she wants to. If I sell him, the health guarantee does not transfer to the new owner. What to do...what to do | |

| Well, I understand completely. Especially after the loss of your last dog and how long it took for you bring another into your life. This must feel like a bad dream but don't give up hope. This might turn out to be nothing after all. Also, if it isn't life threatening but you find out he shouldn't be bred, I would find out what the breeder has to say about that. If she still won't take him back she should at least return the extra money you paid for full breeding rights. I'll be keeping Max in my thoughts. I hope this has a happy ending.

| Update Hi everyone, I just wanted to give an update on Max. Today, I took him for his vaccinations and had the vet listen to his heart as well. He said that he didn't hear the murmur at all and I breathed a sigh of relief. It looks like perhaps he WAS overly excited that day. In any case, he's in good health. Yaaaay! I got him microchipped as well. I had to look away..that needle was huge! He gets his rabies shot next week because the vet didn't want to overwhelm him with shots due to his size. Max took it all like a champ though. |

| I am so happy for you that MAX is OK, I know how it feels, I have had three Yorkies in all, and my oldest MAX had a grade 5 out of 6 murmur when he was 9 years old, and he lived with it until he was 11.5 years old. My second one Levi, had a grade 5 out of 6 mumur now as he too has heart failure. He is doing great on Medication. When they are puppies it is apparently fairly common to hear mumours, even when they are older they can have many years of happy life, with treatment. But for you - your little MAX is fine and that is the BEST news you can of had. I was dreding it when I took Teddy (who was then 8 weeks) to the vet for a health check, I held my breath when she listened to his heart, and he is OK too. Enjoy MAX he is a very special little boy who I know will bring you a lot of joy and happiness. |
