Bloodwork on the SAME day as neutering? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

While I liked Brooklyn's current vet, she wanted an INSANE amount of money for neutering him. So, I have decided to switch him to another well known, but less expensive vet in the city.

When I made the appt (its on Friday) they said they would do the bloodwork on the same day as the neutering. Is this possible? I don't see how they would know the results that quickly.

Also, what other neuter-related questions I should ask?

When I got my male neutered they did blood test the same day also hes fine now.

My vet told me the same thing, and it was a concern to me also. I would rather they do it a few days before myself. Who is to say if they even do it. You can tell I have alot of faith in vets.

The blood test done the same day is an inhouse test. It gives some information but not as complete as a blood panel. I only have a blood panel done a few days before a surgery if the dog is 5 years or older or if there is a risk of some sort such as an existing condition making surgery a little more risky.

My vet also does the bloodwork and blood panel the day of the surgery. They said it takes atleast an hour to get the results back.

Yes - what type of anesthesia do they use? They should ONLY use a GAS anesthesia -- ISOFLOURANE.

Having the bloodwork on the same day of surgery is fine. Ask them to call you with the results of the bloodwork BEFORE They do the surgery.

In addition to ONLY using Isoflourine Gas (NO IV!), they should not use a Barbituate injection. Ask them about this.

Piccolo was neutered 2 weeks ago and they did the blood test just before the surgery.
Ask the vet if he lost ALL of his baby teeth. If not have them pulled at the same time. Piccolo had 3 baby teeth left.
As far as the cost - I paid $ 600 . The teeth were $42 each.
Also it's better to take him home in the evening than leave him in the hospital.

I will be making Peanut's appt. soon for neutering I am not looking forward to it. My vets keep them overnight, I asked if someone would be there, they have vet techs that live there. Do you think he would be ok to come home that evening? My female sheppard mix came home the same day, that was 10 years ago and she was fine, a little doped up. I hate to leave Peanut there all night long in a cage without his family. What have you all done?

VickiG, I think now a days most (or at least in my experience) release them on the same day rather than the next, but I am sure some feel better keeping them overnight. This particular vet releases them the same day.
