| 5 mo old Biewer Yorkie spinning in circles Hi everyone. I have never posted on here but i have read a lot before and since I got my Biewer Yorkie, Merlin. A little information on what we're dealing with here. I adopted Merlin about 3 months ago from a breeder. He has been a happy active pup since I got him. He had some issues with ear mites the first couple of visits to the vet. I received some Ivermectin and put them in his ears. We had to do another treatment because in his right ear there were still earmites after the first treatment. I went to the vet for his last set of shots last Friday and the vet said he had some yeast in his ear and to clean it out with ear cleanse & to put him on grain free puppy food, which he is now on. I should also mention that Merlin is only 2.6 lbs and he drinks a TON of water. The vet told me that he should only be drinking 2-3 ounces of water a day. He drinks like 10 ounces a day. I wasn't giving this a ton of thought because I live in Orlando, FL and it's super hot here. I was told to bring a urine sample in to the vet office first thing the following week to see if there's anything up with that. Since 9:30 PM Sunday, two days after his last set of shots he has been spinning in circles. I'm talking constantly spinning around counter clockwise, unless he is being distracted by a treat, or if we are playing with him and keeping him engaged. He tried to stay up all night the first night doing it. I had to physically hold him in the bed with me until he finally gave up and went to sleep. My boyfriend woke up at 3:00 AM and he was in the kitchen spinning in circles. I immediately took him to the vet in the morning. Three veterinarians (our regular vet wasn't there that day) looked at him and said that its probably due to his ear because he has an ear infection. (which we were never told before) The new vet also said that she couldn't see his eardrum and it may be perforated. (I need to get more clarity on that when i go back next week, I don't know if she meant that there was so much gunky buildup that she couldn't see it or that it was gone.) He is now on antibiotics Clavamox and an antifungal Ketoconazole(both oral.) I am praying to God every night that it is just the ear issues, but now I've been reading so many things online that a dog circling could correlate with liver shunts, canine vestibular disease, etc. I'm starting to really worry. If anyone can give me any ideas or experiences as to what it might be I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Christie |

| Hi, Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Your little guy sure is a cutie, and I'm sorry he's having problems. Your vet probably is on the right track, treating the ear infection. Once that is cleared up, if the circling continues the vet would probably do blood work, which would show if liver enzymes are elevated. A bile acid test would be ordered too, to zero in on liver function. But, I think it's best for now to just focus on the first diagnosis, and don't worry to much. Hopefully it's just the ear issue, and there is no need to worry about all the other "what ifs".

| I'd like to believe that it's just the ear, but with the excessive water intake added in, I'd be at the vet (well, probably another vet for a second or third opinion) today doing some bloodwork at the very least. Basic bloodwork and a bile acids test really should be done asap. If it continues, you will also need to see a neurologist if the bloodwork is okay. You may be able to think of this as the preop bloodwork before getting your pup altered. As long as it's done in the near future, you could just repeat the CBC right before surgery (if you are planning on altering).

| Thanks everyone for the kind words. I brought the urine sample to the vets this morning and they are supposed to get back with me today. If the circling continues or there is something off with his urine then they said they would do an ultrasound. I think i'm going to ask them to do some bloodwork and bile acid test just to be on the safe side, even if they don't catch something with the urine. |

| I am happy to announce that Merlin is no longer circling non-stop. YAY!!! I guess it was due to the ear issues. He's almost done with his meds and they have made a huge difference. His urine tests were all normal except for the urine specific gravity. The norm is 1.015 to 1.050. 1.015 being the most dilute and 1.050 being the most concentrated. The first test came back 1.010, BUT on the second test 2 days later, it came back 1.015 which is right on the line of normal. So the vet said we should wait a month to do another one. Hopefully, It comes back normal. I was so scared with the circling, it was like he was under a trance-like spell. It was so scary to watch and not be able to do anything to help him. Thanks again to everyone, y'all are so sweet!
