Pulling Baby teeth tomorrow - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hi guys,
Its past midnight and I'm still up! I am worried sick as I am taking Cookie to the vet in the morning to get her 4 canines pulled and for her 1st cleaning. She's 1 now so the vet feels its time to pull them since they don't seem to be going anywhere...

What is the type of anesthesia that is best for our little ones? I'm sure the vet will give me some info but did ur babies eat soon after getting their teeth pulled? I'm just worried that she won't be eating breakfast before the surgery and then what if she doesn't want to eat b/c of the pain after. Any first hand experiences?
Please keep my Cookie in ur prayers...

Isoflourene is what you want for these little ones. I am sure that's what he uses. The bad one is sodium barbitol I think. Something like that. It should be really quick, but make sure the vet has an assistant during the sugery to monitor vitals. It's too hard for one person to do it all, but some vets do to cut costs.

I am sure Cookie will be fine. Good uck and let us know how it went.

My Buddha was supposed to be getting neutered and having teeth pulled, but t was cancelled because my little Chai uas kennel cough and he was possible exposed to her so we have to reschedule it.

Make sure the vet uses Isoflourine and nothing else!!! My vet doesn't use it and we are getting Lexy spayed out of town when the time comes! I can't make him understand!!!!

Everything will be fine

Ladys teeth had to be pulled at 6months old at the same time she was spayed..this meant that we didnt even give them a chance for them to losen and she had them all out..8 in total.The reason for this was that Lady is tiny and her jaw was in danger of being disfigured due to the baby teeth,so instead of waiting they were pulled very early.I was so worried because I was sure shed be in so much pain afterwards!!

After the surgery she had alot of blood on her face and her gums seemed a little swollen,but when we got home 2 hours after surgery she was eating KIBBLE!

I left some canned food down for her but she went straight for the kibble..I think that crunching on it soothed her gums in some way because she was fine.Your baby will be ok

Infact,in my experience they dont feel much pain at all

It's so hard when we worry as we do over our little one's. But remember that you have so many of us here at Yorkie Talk keeping Cookie in our thoughts and thinking of you too.

She will be ok - As mentioned the Isoflourine is the one to use.

Good morning guys,
Thank u sooo much for the info. and for sharing ur experiences. I'm sure everything will go fine, God willing. Its about 8 a.m. so we'll be at the vets by 9. I'll be a nervous wreck while i'm at work. I made sure to schedule it on a Fri. and I'm leaving work early to be with Cookie during her groggy hours. Thanks again and i'll keep u posted later on today.

All I can say is I wouldn't do it! It is way to wrisky!! Is it really worth the wrisk? I was told Timmee needed baby teeth pulled out! Well when I looked into it, I had second thoughts! 3 years latter, his baby teeth fell out on there own!9 And I have them all) he is perfectly fine! Any time a small toy breed is put under for anything it can have fatal results!!!! Unless it's life threatening, why ever take that wrisk just bacause the Vet says so! remember they are out to make big bucks on folks who love there Yorkies so much and only want the best no matter what the cost!!! Just PLEASE give it more thought!!! Give nature a chance...

Everything in life has risks but sometimes we have to take them..thats the way of life.Sure we could wait for the baby teeth to eventually rot and fall out or break when the dog is 3 years old,but the down side to that is alot worse than the simple procedure of having them taken out.Retained baby teeth can cause ALOT o problems,a deformed jaw which can be painful,it can also cause over or underbite which isnt pretty..it can also cause the baby teeth to rot and cause an infection that can reach the brain or bloodstream,this of course is fatal.It also causes really bad breath and incomfort for the dog...so is having them pulled worth it? Yes

My yorkie weighed well under 2 lb´s when I had her teeth pulled,I had it done at the same time she was spayed,and Im glad I did it..she was totally fine.Of course there is a risk,but the risk of something happening if you leave the baby teeth in is alot worse to me.
You have a male IluvtinyTim right? Are you not going to have him neutered? Did you know that if you dont he will do what most un-neutered males do..he will start marking his teritory which means he will be peeing up your walls etc..
So you see sometimes we have to take risks for the thier and our own good

My little Yorkie has been fixed, so not to worry! he doesn't have bad breath at all.. And his jaw is perfect... Actually I get all his shots, every year. I just don't agree with the risk of putting him under just to " Fix his teeth" my opinion for what it's worth. Thank you for responding..P.S. His teeth actually look great.. He eats lot's of greenies. and the most expensve high quality doggie food around...

Hi everyone,
Cookie came through her extractions just great!!

The vet put up with my 100 questions and made sure to show me everything he was going to be using on her. He thoroughly explained what I could expect afterwards. She was very alert and awake when I picked her up..of course she was super excited to see her mommy and my bf (her daddy.) The vet advised not to feed her for up to an hour after getting home which I was kinda hesitant about b/c she hadn't eaten anything all day!!!

But when I did feed her I made sure to mush up her food by adding a little water and she ate it all up. I fed her a little bit and waited about an hour to make sure she wouldn't throw anything up and then fed her the rest of her dinner and she was sooo content. I'm just glad its over...she has no more baby teeth, her teeth are nice and clean and she got microchipped also. I left her food in its normal state today and she was fine w/ it. Only thing I've noticed is that she is favoring her softer toys to chew on. Well thanks again for listening and sharing. Oh and yes he did use Isoflourene...the vet even showed me the tank w/ the name on it...LOL!!! I guess he saw the worried look on my face...

You must feel very worried I would to but everyone on yt is praying for you in good things to happend!Hope that he must use the anesthesia Isoflourine thats the one you MUST use!

Im so glad that Cookie came out like a trooper from her surgery. I get making her food softer is a good idea, at least for the first couple of days. I haven't spayed Gucci yet, but I know i wil be a wreck also. Im so happy that Cookie is fine.

I am glad cookie is fine. I want to agree with you Ilovetinytim. I don't believe in elective surgeries for myself, my children, or my pets (with an exception for spay/neuter). I have had all my cats fixed over the years, sometimes in conjunction with an infection or something else they might have to be put to sleep for. My young male has double teeth, I just watch them. Yorkies have notoriously bad teeth anyway and need to be watched carefully.

Hello to all the Yorkie People Out there!

I think your dogs are adorable, but I love collies.
I just got on the internet and found your site -- it is wonderful! I want to let you know my experience with anesthesia. PLEASE NEVER let your vet use Xylazine or Rompom anesthesia!!! It killed my love of my life dog, Denver. He was three years old, in perfect physical health, (I had even met most of his relatives three generations back from a very reputable breeder. I just took him in to get his teeth cleaned, and now he's gone forever. In court, the vet said he used Xylazine as a pre-anesthetic. It took my lawsuit for this to come out. This anesthesia is for large animals only, i.e. cows and horses. It will kill any small animal within 24 to 48 hours. The only anesthesia to use is isoflourine, preferably with a heart monitor. Please help me get the word out! Thank You.
