Unhappy Important question regarding spaying!

Hello everyone,

Well the dreaded day has come and I need to get Nala spayed(not sure how you spell it) !!! I just spoke with the vet and she said I could drop her off next friday at 7:45am and won't be able to pick her up until saturday at around 12:00....is that normal? When we got our boy Jack Russel, cinco, fixed he came home the same day and was immediately back to normal. She is used to sleeping next to me at night and I am sure they keep them locked up in kennels and aren't around to let them out at all. I asked her if I had to leave her overnight and she said "no, but we HIGHLY recommend leaving her!" What should I do, I don't want her to be in pain if she does come home too soon, but I also don't want her to hate me for leaving her there!!! I need advise as to what others do in this situation.

Thanks!!!

When I took Lola in to be spayed, I made sure to tell the vet that she would not be there over night. Barring any complications, I don't know why the vet would need to keep your baby overnight. I thought that I would be better at watching her then a vets office that usually has more than one patient at a time.

Nala sure is a sweetie

We brought Punkin home the same day and she was fine.

If you do decide to leave her all night - make sure they have someone there. Around here anyway, many vets do not have an attendant all night
and the animals are alone. Better she be home with you than all alone.

Default Roxie was spayed yesterday am, brought her home in the pm

My little Roxie (10 mos old) was spayed yesterday morning. I picked her up at 4 pm and brought her home. She is a bit sore but I am taking care of her and was so glad to have her home with me last night instead of in a cage at the vets. I put her in her roomy crate and put the warmer in her Snugglepuppy and gave her some soft food (she had a couple of tooth extractions as well) - also when she didn't eat at first, gave her some Nurtical which stimulated her appetite. She's sleeping now so hopefully feeling more comfortable.

Question To stay or not to stay?

Rylie was spayed 1 month ago, i dropped her off on Monday morning and she had to stay over night and was ready to come home Tuesday morning. i think the reason they keep them over night is to just be able to monitor them, as the vet told me people don't realize how invasize this surgery is. It's nothing compared to a boy.

Her whole uterius is removed. Think about it this way. When a women has a hestorectamy(i have no idea how to spell that) It is about a 3-4 week recovery period and they stay in the hospital a few days. our girls are virtually getting the same surgery but they don't get any pain killers or anything.

My girl wasn't normal for about 4-5 days always sleeping. very slow walking around, and so scared to get up or get off the couch/bed. I called the vet to make sure this was normal and he said it was. That underneath her stitches there are another 2 layers of stitches.

I think it's in the best interest of your girl if she just stays overnight. (at my vet he has an apartment/room where he stays many nights. If there are animals over night they are never left alone he is always there.) My Rylie sleeps with me everynight also. I don't think she was too upset that she was kept over night, because when i phoned the vet he just told me that she has just been sleeping the whole day.

I'm not sure this helps, but i'm sure she will be fine

Thanks for all of the help... I just called the vets office again to see if someone will be there w/ her during the night. She said "no, we leave at 5:30pm but come back at 7:30am so I can pick her up then" So I asked why it would be better to leave her somewhere that no one would be there to watch over her, she didn't know what to say.....all she said was its a "clinic policy"! I just still don't understand how it could be better to leave these small dogs alone for 14 hours after they have had a major surgery and say it's better than taking them home where you can keep a close eye on them and make sure they stay quiet and comfortable! This is stressing me out, and making me really nervous!

Default Take her home if no one will be at the vets

I don't want to scare you but I have a friend who had her female Briard spayed and she left her overnight - no one was there and there was a problem and the dog died. At least if you have her home with you, if there is a problem you can take her to an emergency vet clinic (hopefully there is a 24 hour vet in your area) or call your vet's emergency line for help. I personally would not be comfortable with leaving my dog at a clinic unmonitored after surgery.

I totally agree! We do have an emergency vet hospital about 5 minutes from our house and I would feel safer watching her at home and keeping her in her crate for the night with me sleeping next to her than having her somewhere that no one will be for 14 hours! I kind of understood the idea of leaving them overnight, ONLY if someone was there throughout the night monitioring their condition but when I heard that no one would be it freaked me out!!

I just had my Muffin spayed on the 11th and she stayed overnight because she does not due well with the aftermath of anesthesia - And, Technicians are on site 24 hours for sick/injured patients. My Vet handles each spay and neuter on a dog by dog basis which works in the best interest of the patient. With that said, I would do what is best for your individual baby...Which should include both your maternal instinct and the expert medical advice of your Vet in mind. JMO - Take her home ONLY if she's doing better than expected after the procedure. Overall, I'm sure she will do quite well either way! GOOD LUCK!

Hi,

I'm waiting for my baby girl to come home next Friday.
This is my 1st time owning a dog, so I have so many questions (spaying her is one of them)

So should we or should we not leave our baby left at the vet overnight?
By the way, does a female yorkie still have periods after getting spayed?
Should I prepare diapers for her? or what do I do?

Thank you

We haven't had our yorkie spayed yet, she's just 4 months now. But we have three cats who were spayed and they all stayed overnight. Our vet is a 24hr hospital and they administer pain meds with surgery. Our vet even gave Sadie some baby aspirin when she went in for her last shot!

Well tomorrow is the day!!! I have been dreading tomorrow since I made the appointment, I just want her to be the same dog that she is now. I hope this procedure doesn't change her personality or attitude. i have heard some people say that it changes their pets, so i hope this doesn't happen to Nala. I have been worrying myself to death! I just spoke with the vet's office and she told me they would be doing the surgery first thing in the morning so she will have the entire day to recover and by the time i can pick her up they should know how she handled it and if there were any complications that would cause her to need to stay overnight. I do have to sign a release form if something happens to her during the night, but I would much rather her be with me than in a cage alone for 14 hours!! So, I will let everyone know how it goes tomorrow. If I have any problems, I am sure someone on here will be able to help me.....hopefully it goes well! thanks for everyones comments, it really helped me make my decision to take her home with me!
