| Pam ... I rely on my vet to tell me when they will need cleaning. She checks them every time I take Toto in to be checked. I was discussing it with our breeder this week and she said that it varies ... she has some babies that need it every six months and one that doesn't need it but about every year and a half! I have begun brushing Toto's and I always look over every inch of her each day! Right now she is just lying around like a lump because her Papa is in Colorado and we won't see him until Nov. 2! He's only been gone one day ... don't think I can bear to look at this sad little face for six weeks! My daughter-in-law and I have a new routine for her which we will start on Monday so maybe that will help!

| Pam, I took Maddie for her yearly shots last week and asked Doc about her teeth. He said they were fine and she is 19 months old. Like Toto's mom said I thin it depends on the dog..................Cindy |

| Don't forget to buy a little toothbrush to brush your Yorkie's teeth! Nothing sadder than a senior Yorkie with no teeth... We try to brush Yoda's teeth everyday, but sometimes the little guy goes to bed early. |

| I will admit, in all my years of having dogs I have never brushed their teeth. However I know they need it and to me is much safer then having them put under at the vet for a cleaning. Fasteddie, was it easy to "train" your Yorkies to accept having their teeth brushed? Is this something that needs to be done everyday them? Schatzie hates me looking into her mouth but I am willing to teach her to have her teeth brushed for sure. |

| NO! He still doesn't like it too much. Though there is some toothpastes that they are supposed to like the flavor of. I have to hold his mouth, put the mini toothbrush in, and basically force it onto his teeth. Luckily he doesn't have that many teeth, but still it's a struggle. For the first few times, I suggest have two people do it together, one to hold the Yorkie and one to brush... |

| I don't think they will ever "like" the toothbrushing but I think it's a "necessary evil" for their own good! Toto's toothbrush has three tiny brush heads and is supposed to brush them all faster and better ... don't know if that's true yet but I am going to try and find something tinier! Even though it's small it seems that she would tolerate one even smaller! However, she does love the toothpaste ... licks it so fast it's hard to get to her teeth!!

| Brushing Patrick's Teeth is a Hassel I have tried to brush Patrick's teeth one time and its was the BIGGEST hassel. He WILL NOT let me do it. Brusing a dog's teeth is definatley not a one person job. I had to get my dad to hold him while I pried open his mouth and he still wanted to play wiggle worm. I even tried brushing them while I gave him a bath... since he isn't so hyper in the tub but that didn't work either. He gets really nervous and scared. I guess he thinks I might hurt him. He has only had 5 teeth fall out. And it looks a little crowded in there. My dad teases him and says he needs braces...poor baby. I guess all I can do is keep trying. Maybe I should try a different brush and toothpaste. If anyone knows anything that works well please let me know! Thank You! |

| I was just in my bathroom brushing my own teeth. Schatzie of course sitting there watching me. I looked at my tooth brush then back at her again. Did this a few times and thought..."hmmm, I wonder if she will let me use MY toothbrush on her?" Don't panic now, I have a new one that I replaced the one I used on her, LOL!! So, I got down on the floor and let her lick my wet toothbrush, then treated it like a game. She could smell my toothpaste aroma on there even though I rinshed my toothbrush, eventually she began biting at it. I began saying in a baby voice, "oh brushy brushy, good little girl, brushy brushy" and began brushing those little teeth of hers. I never held her, she just acted like this was a fun new game. Yeah, her teeth were brushed. Not with paste, will have to go get some doggy paste. However she loved my toothbrush. So, now have to make sure I don't use hers and get me out a new one the next time I brush my own teeth. Will begin doing this everyday and still treat it like a game. |

| Yup, anytime your Yorkie can treat it like a game, it's a good thing! It just means you have a chance at doing what you want with her! |

| I went to Petsmart today and got an actual doggie toothbrush and paste. One of the brushes just slips over my finger. Seems good enough. I will try it later tonight when she is more settled. Right now she is too much in the "play mode". I will let you all know how this stuff works out. Of course we had to get more clothes, toys and treats while out too. Oh, and a new x-pen. One with a top on it, no jumping out!! |

| Oh, that finger toothbrush thing didn't work out too well for us. We just found a baby-size toothbrush I think that works better and scrubs better (has bristles like a regular toothbrush, but much smaller). |

| Electric toothbrush This may sound crazy but it has worked for Rexi. He used my old oral-b/braun electric toothbrush with poultry flavored toothpaste (available at vets by prescription). Anyways, to get him used to it, I left it on the ground a few times and turned it on. He played with it a few times and now he is ok with me brushing his teeth every other day |

| darish .... good idea!! I wondered about those but figured Toto wouldn't ever tolerate the sound! Will definitely try that! The brush I bought at PetSmart has three tiny little heads on it and is supposed to be designed to brush more and better! Although it is small, it's too large for her tiny little mouth! The only thing she likes about it is the toothpaste and she loves that!! Thanks!!
