| itchy spots & biting ok, I had a family member dog-sit parker while I was on vacation. Unfortunately, he didn't get brushed as often as I do it, and all around the base of is tail, his back, down onto his legs got really badly matted. So he started biting and scratching at it like crazy. I did my best to get most of the mats out, but he is still biting at it like crazy. The hair is alot thinner (I'm not sure if that was from me working the mats out or his biting), and it looks red and sore on his skin (at first I thought that was just from me working out the mats, but it hasnt gone away). I've bought some oatmeal shampoo to help relieve the itching but it hasn't seemed to do much. Will this clear up on its own, should I take him to the vet? I wanted to take him to the groomer next week, but I don't think I should until I know what it is for sure. Any suggestions??? Thanks |

| Sounds like those are hot spots. You could try putting tea tree oil on it. You can find that at drug stores and health food stores.

| Oh, and he's been on the same food since September. He gets Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. so i dont think he would just start itching from that |

| Meeko scratches and bites at himself alot as well. I dont know why or what I should do. I looked at his skin for dryness, but can't see anything. He eats Eukanuba Puppy Chiots and I bathe him with a pet shampoo called 6-in-1 Perfect Coat, Tearless Protein. I condition him with L'Oreal Kids Tearless Conditioner (no knots or flyaways). He gets a professional cut/groom about every four weeks. His treats are human-grade Jump & Bites made from peanut butter (from the Three Dog Bakery) and the Kong product Beef & Liver. How do I tell if he is allergic to something I feed him. Keep in mind, its not 100% of his waking hours. But for a dog with no fleas, it seems like he scratches and bites at himself alot. |
