| Rimadyl for Luxating Patella and other ??s Kandi is ten years old, and when I got her back about a week ago (after not having custody of her for 3 years), she was limping. Our vet is great, but he's a country vet with a small practice. He believes it's a luxating patella (one back knee) with issues involving the ligament. He put it in simpler terms, but from my research, I think that's what he meant. He put her on Rimadyl for inflamation and pain management, wants me to keep her from jumping, and he will reevaluate in about a month. If it's serious enough to require surgery, he will refer us to a vet/surgeon in Austin. I believe this was caused by an injury in the past few months, but I cannot be sure. I know these symptoms were not present for the first 7 years of her life. Here are my pressing concerns. First, the Rimadyl really seems to be helping. It's the name brand and flavored/ chewable. It costs about $25 a week ($100 a month). She does not like pills and is very hard to dose, but she LOVES these. She eats them better than most treats. The generic is not flavored, so I know we will wrestle with dosing her. However, it is considerably cheaper (3 month supply for like $40). I can afford the more expensive pills, but it will cut into what I have saved for her surgery if it's needed. So, hmmm... I know this is up to me to decide, but wondered if anyone had any suggestions or can point out anything obvious I am missing here or overlooking. Also, is it too late to try glucosamine supplements? Do they actually do any good? Is there anything else I can be doing to help her right now while we wait for the reevaluation in a month?

| Well, I bought a week's worth of the generic. She doesn't like it as well, but I think it will work. I can always go back if she really starts resisting it.

| You can try pill pockets. You might want to go ahead and look into getting an opinion from an orthopedic specialist. My older girl has had multiple surgery’s. It is very rough so I would try everything else before surgery.

| Three questions... I assume an orthopedic specialist is a different specialty from an orthopedic surgeon. Is it? What do you mean by "everything else" or is that something the specialist will tell me? Is glucosamine worth it? Does it help or is it hype? Thank you for your help.
