| Should we worm? Hi, Our year and a half old Yorkie just came back with staying with the breeder while we were on vacation. She mentioned that we should worm him since he doesn't seem to be gaining weight the way he should. Now we think of it, when staying with the breeder he's exposed to pups and other dogs and he is a bit of a poop eater. So worming sounds sensible. Is that something we can easily do ourselves or should we take him to the vet? He saw the vet just a couple of months ago and got a clean bill of health but they didn't do a stool sample. Thanks. | Take him to the vet for a once over . You’re yorkie may just be small and gain weight slowly. But if your breeders pups and home had worms or parasites then you should be better safe than sorry so your pup doesn’t pick that up.

| At that age they aren't growing anymore so they shouldn't be putting on any more weight or anything. You can take a stool sample in and then they can tell you if there are worms and then if there are any you can deworm. I would not just deworm for the heck of it.

| The antibiotics are not really good for dogs so my feeling is that you should be sure he has parasites or worms before treating. If he is housed in a common area with other dogs they should have a fecal culture each stay. You just don't know what the other dogs might have. |

| Oh, good to know. I just assumed worms and parasites would be treated the same. In my mind they're all yucks. Zeke got antibiotics for his little buddies aka parasites. |
