| To spay or not to spay im so conflicted about having my 7 month old yorkie spayed. My vet advises doing it now but I've also been told it's better to let her go into heat once first. Also I don't know if I might want to breed her once. I would appreciate all opinions |

| Welcome to YT. Don't breed if you are not and experienced breeder, you could end up losing your girl and entire litter. Breeding is not throwing any ole male yorkie in with your female and bingo you get puppies. Breeding is all about breeding to better the breed. You have to check back several generations on both your girl and the male to ensure there are no genetic defects that will be passed on to a litter of puppies. No female under 5 pounds should be bred and can be very dangerous. Yes some ppl feel waiting until a female has her first heat then spaying gives more time for growth plates to close. I followed my vets advise with all my girls, spayed before first heat, they were appox. 6 months old. Spaying before first heat ensures there will never be mammary gland tumors, and she will not get pyometra which can be fatal. Listen to your vet, spay now, leave breeding up to the experts PLEASE. Love that little girl, spoil her rotten and just keep her as a pet only.

| You should have her spayed and it should be done before her first heat. There is absolutely no reason to breed her that should be left to reputable breeders. After their first heat they develop mammories but if you spay them before that they don’t so there is no chance of mammory cancer. After every heat the chance for mammory cancer goes up. Breeding can be very dangerous for the female too. They can die or the puppies could die which is very hard for the Mom or they both could die. If the Mom requires a c-section she could also reject the pups and that means you would have to feed the pups and stimulate them to potty every two hours plus keep them warm. Although we all think our pups are perfect only dogs that follow a perfect example of the breed standard should be breed. Females can also end up with a an illness that fills their uterus with puss and can kill them even if you get the emergency spay. There is no reason a dog needs to have a heat or a litter.

| You have made a very wise choice to have her spayed. Breeding these little babies is not for the faint of heart. There is much one should know in case the female runs into trouble while trying to deliver a puppy. Spaying is a gift of life you have given this little girl. Bless you. Do stick around YT, there is much you can learn and even share with others.
