| Separation Anxiety Whenever we leave the house, we put our yorkie in her crate. She normally doesn't mind the crate; she sleeps in it at night (with the door closed), and we put it on the couch during the day and she goes in it to rest or sleep (with the door open). But, when we need to go out, and we put her in the crate and close the door, she begins pacing back and forth, whining and barking. This continues for much of the time while we're gone (we have a security camera and can check on her and listen in...) She also pees in the crate when we leave, but not over night, and not at other times; just when we leave. Any ideas on how to curb, or at least reduce, her anxiety?

| You could give your Yorky her favorite stuffed animal or toy in her crate when you have to leave to go out. Also spend a minute with her in front of the crate and give you her love and reassuring her that you will be right back. You could also turn on a radio or TV when you go out and that would keep her company. It's funny how they react differently. Good luck! |

| Wookie is 5 months old now, but still sleeps secured in her pen at night. This is a pen, not a crate, and measures 2ft by 4ft. Within it she has her bed, a water dish, and a couple of soothing chew toys, as she is teething at the moment. She has used this pen since we got her at 8 weeks old, and for the first month we would put her in it when we had to go to work. She would be in it until our friend came round to let her out into the garden to do her business, and play with her for an hour before putting her back in until we got home. When she was 3 months old we made the decision to leave the pen door open when we had to leave her. She has since had the run of downstairs while we are at work ( we have a stairgate to prevent her from going upstairs unsupervised) , and even though she knows when we are going out, she is perfectly relaxed about it. It probably helps that she has our three cats for company, and still has her hour with our friend for the two weeks Pete and I are both working late shifts. Have you considered not putting her in the crate when you go out? Would that be worth a try? If she associates the crate with you leaving her, maybe that is causing her distress. |

| Instead of a crate which is confining, when you leave her home alone a E-pen or Iris pen may be better. They are large enough to put in bed, pee pad, water and food bowls, toys and still room for her to move around and play.

| Our dog Heisy is just over a year old and we've trained him to LOVE his crate. I always make it a game for him to go in his crate putting a couple of his favourite stuffed toys and lots of treats easy to digest. When he was younger, we'd leave him in the bathroom (as he didn't have a pen -- but so he can walk around, but with his crate and a mat still available if he wants to nap). I used to leave my iPad with music on for him so he doesn't get startled with sounds from outside. Is your yorkie potty-trained outside or on a pee pad? I also start telling him 10-15 minutes before I leave for work that I am going to work and that he'll be by himself so he has to be a good boy while we're away. I let him do his business one last time and grab a toy and walk him in. Now, I just say "Mommy's going to work!" and he'd run to his crate and wait for me to hand him a bunch of treats. Maybe you could leave a towel or a blanket with your puppy while you're away for comfort?
