| Approx Amounts for Training Treats I am hoping to get a guideline about how much "treat" food I can feed Monty per day aside from his kibble. I have him on Royal Canin Gastrointestinal puppy kibble 2/3 - 3/4 cup based on vet advice. I usually have to moisten it, warm it and sprinkle it with one of his freeze dried liver treats to get him to eat some if I want to make sure he is eating enough. It was suggested to not leave it out for him, but to hand feed him throughout the day (earn to learn or learn to earn or something?) and I do that as well. I will "doctor" his kibble though when I don't think he's eaten enough. He is 7.4 lbs - same weight as when I got him a month ago - but is bonier. I think it's because I take him out 2x minimum daily for 30 mins minimum each time. Smile. Rain or shine!! He's not terribly underweight but I want to put a lil more fat on him. He is not interested in eating any kibble for training. Very rare. Even when I offer it to him without him doing anything, he kind of rolls his eyes, looks away with a "no thanks" kind of sniff. I will take some of the boiled chicken and crumble it and mix it with the kibble so it has a bit of a smell and use that for training and it works - sometimes. So now I have the dehydrator out!! And people are giving sweet potato and apples and apparently Green Beans! Whoot! So how much? How much protein? How much vege/fruit? I think I have understood that about a 1/4 cooked chicken breast per day given throughout the day is okay. How about sweet potato or apple? I am also giving him 1 tbsp of gastrointestinal high fat wet dog food per day. Originally it was so I could give him antibiotics because the wet food hid the smell of it so well I didn't have to torture force syringe feed him the meds (hallelujah!!). Now I want to make my own "rope" jerky of chicken breast, vege/fruit and a tbsp or two of this wet dog food specifically for training purposes. I figure if it is delicious ... then it would work?? What do you suggest? How much do you feed your babies? Thanks for reading... |
