| Has your Yorkie always coughed or hacked? They may be allergic to something in your house if so, such as carpet... |

| sometimes there is a delay Hi. I am sorry if you feel your thread was ignored. As you can see by the "views" it is not. However sometimes it takes time to reply. For instance, your thread is a health issue. Personally for me, if there is something I am not too familiar with i try to do some research on the subject then post my reply with what I have found out. Regarding your fur babies cough, have you read anything on collapsed trachea? I am in no way saying this is what it is...Also, have you contacted your vet? Yorkie Talk is growing very very fast, which is great too! However, with the growth it can take time to reply to all the posts that each of us want to do so with. Again, sorry if you felt ignored, none of us want you to feel that.

| tink-n-kody ... I apologize ... just saw your post! I am "old and slow" and sometimes find it difficult to keep up!! Welcome to Yorkietalk! The only time I have had a problem with Toto coughing & sneezing our vet could find nothing wrong except that we had just had new carpet installed. She gave her medicine and we had to clean the carpet and her cough cleared up! She also "reverse sneezes" when she plays hard which is pretty common in Yorkies! Don't know if that helps but that's the only problem like this that we have had. I noticed you are from Colorado?! We are in Grand Junction because of my husband's job and will be there 2-5 years! Wish I could find someone in GJ with a yorkie baby that Toto could play with. She has never had an opportunity to socialize with other little ones!

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | heres a little thing an reverse sneezing This is a misnomer, for it has nothing to do with actual sneezing. However, it is a popular term for something that appears to be worse than it actually is. When this occurs, your dog will appear to be snorting or choking. The posture will be one of the neck extended with the chest expanded, as the dog struggles to take in air. The actual physiology is that the trachea has narrowed and the normal amount of air is not able to enter the lungs. The triggering mechanisms are usually excitement or stress. If this is happening to your dog, do not panic. You can help your dog by soothingly stroking the upper throat area to encourage relaxation and dilation of the trachea. If things do not resolve soon, and the dog is really having a continued hard time, you can try depressing the tongue to open up the oral cavity for the passage of much needed air into the lungs. The predisposition to this is thought to be hereditary, particularly in smaller breeds because of the decreased diameter of their tracheas. If your dog occasionally has this, do not worry that you need to be there to help each time it happens. A dog is able to come out of an attack of reverse sneezing without help and will not suffer permanent damage. Contributed by Barbara Moore's Veterinarian |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | heres more REVERSE SNEEZE SYNDROME General Information Reverse sneeze syndrome is characterized by a series of rapid, loud, forced inhalations through the nostrils, lasting anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes. Attacks occur on a sporadic, unpredictable basis. Dogs usually have the head extended forward and stand still during the episode. Affected dogs appear completely normal before and after the attack. There is no loss of consciousness or collapse, though sometimes the appearance of the dog is upsetting to owners. Many dogs have these attacks throughout their lives. The exact cause of reverse sneezing is unknown, but it may be associated with sinusitis and other respiratory disorders. Many believe affected dogs are consciously removing mucus form the nasal passages. In fact, many dogs swallow at the end of the attack. Whatever the cause, the condition is usually not serious. If the condition appears suddenly in an older dog or if episodes become more severe or frequent, the nasal passages and throat should be examined. Important points in treatment: Treatment is not necessary when the episodes occur infrequently on a random basis. Home treatments that have been reported to be successful include massaging the throat, blowing in the nose, rapidly and lightly compressing the chest. Sometimes antihistamines will help with frequency or severity of the attacks. You may give your pet _____mg of Benadryl ______ times daily as needed for this. The Benadryl may make your pet sleepy or, rarely, excitable. Notify the Doctor if any of the following occur: The severity or frequency of your pet’s attacks changes. Your pet develops a nasal discharge or a cough. Your pet’s general health changes. |
