| Baby yorkie having trouble pooping My 7 week old yorkie is having a little bit of trouble pooping. He hunches, strains, moves around, and nothing comes out. Then, after minutes, maybe a soft, stringy piece will come out. After, he tends to rub his butt across the floor. What could be causing this issue? |

| Seven weeks old is VERY young to be taken from his mom. Maybe she had been helping him poop by licking his anus as moms do with their young to stimulate them. Time to visit a vet.

| I am most certainly no expert, but the first thing that came to mind, regarding the scooting on his bottom, is that he may have impacted anal glands. I would take him to the vet to potentially have his anal glands expressed. Your vet could advise you how to treat the constipation issue.

| Pretty young. I wouldn't want to make any mistakes with his care at this age. Vet and brushing up on all of the nutritional requirement info I could lay my hands on for a pup of that age. |

| I see you are in Texas? Texas law requires a puppy be at least 8 weeks old before being sold....this baby should still be taking in mothers milk, and that keeps the baby from getting constipated.... "Texas 16 TAC § 91.113 Licensed breeders, which is defined a dog or cat breeder who holds a license issued under chapter 802. V. T. C. A., Occupations Code § 802.001(13) A dog or cat at least eight weeks of age. Sell, trade, or give away May not exceed $5,000 per day for each violation License may be denied, revoked, suspended, or refused to renew V. T. C. A., Occupations Code § 802.251....." |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . What was she eating at the breeder's and what are you feeding now...did something change there...? Why do you have her at 7 weeks old, as this is wayyyy too young to be separated from her Momma...? At this age, you truly need to GET HER TO A VET ASAP - no fooling around when you're dealing with such a newborn...it can be a very dangerous time when these babies are taken from their Momma way too soon.

| The breeder was giving him Purina One from a can. So, I did the same. Now, he is eating Simply Nourish for small breed (puppy) soaked with water. However, the constipation happened while he was still eating the Purina One. As of last night, after I bathed him, trimmed his hair on his bottom, and added a bit of 100% organic pumpkin to his food, he hasn't been having any problem using the bathroom, which I'm very relieved! As to why I have him at such an early age, I was just told that he was eating on his own already so he was ready for me to take him. |

| I got him Sunday (11-28-15), last night he just started drinking water from his bowl. Before the only way to get him to drink water was by mixing it with his food. |

| Bottom line: The person that sold you this baby at that age, is breaking the law in Texas. THAT speaks volumes about that "breeder". At the age you were sold that baby, the "breeder" was not responsible for one thing financially....this baby has had NO vaccinations because it is too young to even be vaccinated....vaccinations dont start until 8 weeks old. Parvo is rampant in Texas....start this baby on vaccinations at 8 weeks of age, get the series of 3-4 puppy shots every 3-4 weeks until it has received its required shots....keep the baby TOTALLY away from other dogs and away from public areas where any other dogs have walked/lived because those areas are already contaminated with the disease.....keep it isolated until at least 12 weeks old and 3 shots have been given....hold off on rabies until the baby is closer to 6-8 months old, as that is a lot of vaccine to inject into a tiny puppy (and they do NOT, adjust the size of the shot according to the size of the dog....it is all just ONE vaccine dose, and the same amount is given to ANY dog, be it tiny yorkie or huge great dane). Last, I would hope that anyone that is aware of specific people that are selling puppies at an illegal age in their State, which does NOTHING but harm to the babies to satisfy the outright greed of a puppy peddler, without a second thought for the outcome for the baby or the person that has been illegally peddled a puppy to satisfy the financial quest of a "greeder", I would hope this activity would be reported to the correct authorities. |

| Great! But keep him away from outside or any other dogs, as any vaccinations received prior to 8 weeks of age are null and void as puppies at that age still have mommas protection on board, which fights off the vaccines given. That is why vaccinations are started at 8 weeks of age, because that is about the time mommas protection wears off, and vaccines given by vets/breeders will be effective. |
