Love Teddi

Teddi is almost 7 months old and doing great, but this morning she had some diarrhea and it was quite smelly....She is a very picky eater and can go for quite long periods without food...which really scares me...Yesterday i was at my daughters house and she cooked carrots...I tried Teddi with a few slices and she seemed to enjoy them......that was the last time she ate anything, almost 14 hours ago...she is drinking ok and is in really good form, running and playing....she had diarrhea again earlier after my husband gave her a slice of ham, which i dont allow her to have..he claims any food is better than no food at all...I have tried her with various puppy foods wet and dry all day today but she wont eat anything.....help!!

Default Teddi

So sorry to hear that Teddi is having tummy troubles. A young pup of seven months should be eating and getting nutrition and it is not good for her not to eat. What does the vet say, has she had an exam or tests recently?
Carrots are usually ok in moderation, but ham is not good for her.
Could you collect a fecal sample and take it fresh to the vet if you do take her?
Could be parasites, a bug, or even some organic issues.
Hope she feels better soon.

Thank you for replying....All this happened today, Saturday...I thought i could wait until Monday as Sunday here isnt a good day to find a vet...The fact that she is so energetic and playing made me think she isnt too sick....Are there any foods i could give to help with the diarrhea until we get to the vet....

I can see the problem with it being the weekend. Do you have a vet on call that you could phone for advice?
One food that people give is pure pumpkin with no additive, but I don't know if you can get that. Otherwise a very plain diet of well boiled white rice with boiled skinless chicken breast. A sprinkle of some topper like Parmesan cheese powder, a very small amount, can sometimes make them eat. Also perhaps try hand feeding small amounts of food?
If the diarrhea is not bad and she behaves normally and you can get her to drink or syringe water into her mouth, she would probably be ok until Monday.
I would suggest that you get her in ASAP, not only for the runs, but for her lack of appetite.
These pups do confuse us and can behave normally even when quite sick, but the symptoms do need looking into.
Good luck and i hope she gets to see a vet , and feels better soon.

Do as dottiesyrky suggested, cooked white rice and boiled boneless chicken cutlets. If she won't eat that combo, hand feed just the chicken. They also like cottage cheese, try a couple of spoons of that. In any case, she must see a vet ASAP......Bring in a fresh sample of her poop as well... Make sure she is drinking water....Please keep us up-dated,,,,,,Good luck.

This might be too late to help you now, but when I first got my puppy she had an awful time with her stools. She mustn't have been wormed so, that had to be done…but after that was settled she still seemed to have runny stools. It was suggested to me, to try the boiled chicken and rice, which she wouldn't touch. Someone else said to buy organic baby food. Sweet Potato..and to mix 1 tablespoon into her dry food. She ate that. I was told that its the opposite effect as on humans, it helps naturally bind them. The other thing I could easily get at a grocery store was a small can of plain (organic if you can find it) pumpkin. It works. Since then I add a spoonful of plain yogurt to her dry food in the morning..for a treat I'll put a little bit of vanilla into it. She loves it! Her appetite is great now. I think her biggest issue was having the worms..ugh. She was a rescue and wasn't cared for very well, poor baby.

Thanks for the update. Poor Teddi, I wonder why she won't eat? At least she is drinking so won't get dehydrated. Hope you can tempt her with some kind of bland food. I am pleased to hear you will be taking her to the vet and hope he can find out what is the matter. Good that no more diarrhea
Good Luck.

I just read the final post and the suggestion of baby food is a good one. Just the chicken if you can get it. It may tide her over until she is seen. Obviously not a good permanent diet though for a pup!

Carrots can commonly cause diarrhea in some dogs...always start very slow w/ carrots..and for some, they just don't work, period...your baby may be one of those. When my kiddos are feeling icky, I tend to give some simple/easy carbs to get them back on track...like little pieces of bread or white cracker, that can help. Hope the rice and chicken goes well!!

I imagine the carrots and ham irritated her tummy. The rice/chicken will get her back on track. Don't worry about her eating too much today, it's better to let their tummy rest after diarrhea. I usually cook a little chicken and use the broth to get fluids in first. After that I use the broth, mixed with dry baby rice cereal. Tiny pieces of chicken after that.

Once she is actually eating it may be time to find new food for her. Check out some of the posts on here about Freshpet. Do they have anything similar where you are?

Again thank you for the update. Glad to hear she is eating a little and drinking.
Hoping the vet can find out why she does not eat much and for the loose stool. If you can get a fresh stool sample before you go to the vet, that would be helpful.
Knowing our pets though, if we want them to 'go' they won't! Hope she is ok today and eating a bit. Good Luck tomorrow

Hi D.....Teddi is very well now thank you....I took her to the vet on Monday, didnt get a stool sample as she wouldn't 'go' for me...The vet took her temperature which was normal and examined her..she said it was gastroenteritis and she had quite a few cases the previous week...She prescribed half ml of Zantac syrup twice a day and 2ml of Provita Canine recovery probiotic once a day for 1 week....The vet said im giving her too much choice when im feeding her and she wont eat because she is holding out for food she likes....(could be true)....About the boiled chicken, boiled rice and sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, she just loves it...I know i cant give it to her too often but i couldn't believe how much she loves it......Her appetite is a bit better since she was sick, so fingers crossed and thank you for all your help....She's the best wee puppy ever....soooo good
