I've been feeding mine this dog food for a while now

Oh my, that is so horrible. I hope word gets out about it. I know they put a lot of cash toward marketing that brand and it shows. The bag it comes in is very nice looking bag. The food is garbage though. I think it got a one star (out of 5) rating on dog food advisor. it is hard to find a brand that has not had any recalls or warnings. I have my pup on wellness, and I believe they had a recall in 2012 due to possible salmonella contamination from one of diamond dog foods production plants. I put myself on a dog food recall notification list just to be safe.

I heard a while ago it was linked to deaths. I kinda wonder if it's what caused one of the dogs I grew up with to end up with cancer and having seizures probably will never know. Purina is the makers of the waggin train chicken jerky that was linked to hundred of dogs deaths and it took them years to pull it. Sadly it's back on the market. I would not trust them and would not feed any of there food especially not this one. I would switch ASAP.

Stars don't mean anything, the guy who rates them is a human dentists. It's not necessarily about recalls but how they are handled.

Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor is a great easy to read source while selecting potential foods to feed your pups. There is a lot of good info to read there. It's a wonderful tool for your tool box. I hear complaints about him being a dentist but I have yet to hear that ANY of his info is faulty. I haven't seen anyone post an easier to read source than Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor .

I wouldn't touch this crap food with a 10 foot pole.

The closest places here for me is where Karen lives or over towards St. Louis.
After hearing this on the news last night, I'm going to call the vet after work.
My lil boy means to much to me to be taking any chances.

This is a perfect example why you shouldn't buy pet food from Big Brands like Purina, pedigree and supermarket brands. They spend their money on marketing but cut money on the ingredients that goes into the actually food. Just my 2 cents..

Yes, the guy is a dentist and his website is all about the guy making money.....which is what so many people complain (incorrectly) about vet's who sell RX foods. If you want to have nutrition information about dog food there are much better resources for your "tool box" from members of the Veterinary profession and based on Science and not opinions. When you are a human dentist your website is based on opinions when it comes to anyone's pet food.

The whole idea of people giving their opinions about dog food is IMO is pretty much like the people that refuse to give their children vaccines siting Google information that is not Science based......just a bunch of people giving opinions and not listening to the Science based conclusions.

I feed all three of mine Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein purchased from (gasp) my vet.

Ordering online works, it doesn't have the "feeling" of walking into a pet store, a return would be more complicated, but wow does it open up the range of foods you can select from. Chewy.com is the one I've tried successfully. Amazon, Petco, Petsmart and lots of others offer shipping..

I'll read some of the articles at the links you provided. Just a quick peek at your links, all I see is articles about additional sources of information that you can buy, books, and links to other services though, so far, no specific brands are mentioned, nothing that helps select or rule out a specific brand or formula. I'll keep looking!

I haven't spent a dime at dogfoodadvisor.com, does he offer paid services, of course, do you have to pay, no. Currently, I am unaware of anyone else who has the number of brands and specific formulas reviewed, information, for easy consumption by consumers. He does lump a bunch of specific formulas into a review of the brands but he does so overtly, he seems to offer pretty objective information. It's just so EASY to use to help narrow down the list of available foods. He has some recall info available and so much more. It's just a starting place, a quick reference guide to narrow down the search.

Does any veterinary professional have an available free database, based on science and not opinions, that is easy to use for us consumers? Because that is what I'm missing, a link to a free usable database built on science. Dogfoodadvisor.com has a database built on his opinions and some basic nutritional info, it's easy to use, it's free unless you want something extra. I truly don't understand the animosity for "The Dentist". LOL

Show me something better to help narrow the search and I'd be happy to use it. :cool:

I really can't believe people are still feeding stuff like Purina and that crap. Even if it's not actually killing dogs, all you have to do is look at the ingredients to know cheap, heavily processed food full of fillers and bad meat is not healthy :(

Actually, it's the small holistic companies that have a big bloated budget for marketing while companies like Purina hire veterinarians. It's the pretty bags with a list of great sounding ingredients formulated by someone's relative that scare me more.

I home cook so I'm unfairly in this discussion. But I have and would use Purina while I would not use or trust many other foods.

I will have to agree with you that Dog Food Advisor is for the less sophisticated consumer that needs a quick reference for a knee jerk purchase on the opinions of other consumers and the dentist (who is this aspect is just another consumer).

After posting information that requires following a few links and reading actual scientific results, I see how basic dog owners/consumers looking knee-jerk answer would find information that is more complicated a little overwhelming. We do live in a word of quick satisfaction even if it leads to misinformation which is also at issue.

Both of the sites that I linked are not fee bases so I am left to assume only a very quick glance was made to them proving my above statement about that knee-jerk answer to questions. I'm a very inquisitive person so I find the information from Dr. Remmilard and Skeptvet high interesting. The difference between my links and DogFood Advisor is the idea that their information is based on science and not opinions of other consumers. With a little bit of link following Dr. Remmilard and Skeptvet are very informative in how dog foods are trailed and tested. Their writing is not opinion based it is science based which I prefer. This information has help me greatly in deciding how to pick brands of food that meets the needs of my pets. I would avoid Purina even if it was free.
Look at their ingredient list and their recalls.

I like Farmina N&D or Fromm - being around over 100 years, good ingredients and never had a recall.

Oh, I can believe it. There are people who read and understand scientific fact .. people who are not swayed by advertising.

Has anyone talked to their own vet to see what they had to say?

About Beneful or dog food in general?

I worry about star rating sites because a vet will prescribe a food and a person will go look to see what it's rated and not feed it when that is what there dog needs and then the dog is left to suffer. My baby girl was vomiting and had diareah and was just miserable vet diagnosed IBD and put her on Royal Canin Small Breed hypoallernic and it was the best thing that happened too her she no longer has the issues and is my playful 7 soon to be 8 year old pup! When a dog has allergys any food that is not home cooked or priscription still comes in contact with the ingredients that can cause the allergy issues even if there not in the food. These foods save dogs lives yet people will stop feeding them because of there rating. There is so much more to what dogs need then just ingredients and what they need is not the same as what we need or what we think is good food.

The Snopes article is from 2007, so it doesn't take into account this new lawsuit. The new lawsuit is in its initial phases, so it hasn't been decided yet. However, the lawsuit is being widely reported in the press, so it's not a frivolous lawsuit. One of the articles I read about the lawsuit said that Beneful contains propylene glycol and mycotoxins. Propylene glycol is mildly to moderately toxic (see Propylene Glycol - Pet Poison Helpline) and mycotoxins are extremely toxic in any quantity. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and change from Beneful to a more trustworthy brand.

Doubt they have vet nutritionists on staff.
Recalls are voluntary.
Ingredient lists tell you nothing about nutrient profile or digestability of the product.

Just saying.

Rather humorous , they give a longer disclaimer for the drugs they sale for humans and people still use it. They put out a pet food that might be harmful to our pets, we will ban together and demand it's removal .

We just don't have good pet food rules and regulations we need better ones.

I would never feed my dog this food

Actually from reading the following paragraph of their website I believe they have a good group of nutritionists on staff:

The company now employs approximately 200 people, of which 20 have advanced education and training in animal science, nutrition, quality control and food risk management. The company is also proud to say that several veterinarians are on staff helping to ensure your pets are well taken care of. Dr. Angelo Russo and his brother Nicola Russo have nurtured Farmina into a world class pet nutrition company, not just a pet food company.

I know recalls are voluntary but companies like Purina have them left and right and there is a reason for that.
