Opinions On Royal Canin Requested Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Adult Dry Dog Food Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Adult Dry Dog Food, 10-lb bag I've been searching for a replacement dry dog food for a couple weeks now. Gucci seems to not like Orijin in the two flavors I've tried recently. I literally have to get down on all fours and make sloppy eating noises while hoarding his bowl to get him to eat it or feed him one kibble at a time by hand. I was going to try a Farmina no grain but decided against it for various reasons. This morning, I stumbled onto "Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Adult Dry Dog Food" at chewy.com. This time, in addition to spending hours on the web looking for ratings and info, I decided to check with you all, here at YT. Looking at the ingredients, I really didn't see much that is special but that is comparing it to the more exotics. Gucci is about 5 pounds, 11-13 years old, walks 3 miles 3-5 days a week, very low key personality, barks about once a month, seems very happy, swallows his food whole, requires very small kibble. Any thoughts, experience or knowledge about this breed specific, yorkie, dog food would be much appreciated. I'd love to hear all of the possible negatives in this thread! LOL |

I love it and have used it for over 30 years. My dogs, ALL my dogs over the years, have loved it and have thrived on it. The quality control is second to none. The formulas are nutritionally sound, evidenced based on scientific research and clinical testing. |

I haven't verified this, it was a comment/review left at Amazon: It is made here in the USA but....check the ingredients label because the Yorkshire Terrier #28 that I have always fed my little 3.5 lb Yorkie, Mya, is now being phased out. I was told by a rep of the company that they will only make the Yorkshire Terrier Adult from now on which is fine EXCEPT some of the bags I've checked out on line now list the first two ingredients as rice and the third is chicken by-product meal. Just do your research....CHICKEN MEAL is chicken meat; CHICKEN BY-PRODUCTS is the insides (they said heart, liver and clean intestines??) You decide... |
I feed pre-made raw, so I don't feed kibble. But if I did feed kibble, I'd be feeding Nature's Logic, Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, Orijen, Acana. I don't like the high-carb nature of RC and all the corn. |
It looks like there is two separate Royal Canin foods for yorkies, the Yorkshire Terrier Adult Dry Dog Food and the Yorkshire Terrier #28... and yes, the ingredients are different. Is 28 going away then? It's not at chewy.com. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&key...l_48klqfn7i3_e |
I have used Royal Canin yorkshire puppy for my girl, she is now almost 8 months old and I am getting ready to start adding in the adult RC so she will be weaned off the puppy. I have never had any issues with it and she loves it! |

Gucci seemed very interested in Orijen the first meal, after that, he just won't eat it on his own. The same occurred with two different Orijen formulas. I spent about two weeks on each. Acana being the same manufacturer, I just didn't expect any improvement by trying. Thank you. |

Thank you. I did find instructions, Gucci at 5 pounds, normal weight, should eat about 2/3 cups of the new, non 28, RC Yorkie formula per day. Seems a bit higher than lots of the others.... the corn and other fillers????? |
This is so disappointing to me, they have changed their formula from first ingredient chicken meal, to first ingredient brewers rice, rice and third ingredient is now chicken by-product meal? I have never minded the corn, cooked corn is very easy to digest and that's important for dogs with sensitive tummies, but the ingredients now sound like some bargain basement food. It's not even called Yorkshire Terrier 28, the 28 stood for the protein content and not the protein content is 26. Old ingredients. Ingredients Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Brown Rice, Chicken Fat, Chicken, Corn Gluten Meal, Dried Egg Powder, Barley, Natural Chicken Flavor, Cellulose, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Anchovy Oil, Dried Brewers Yeast, Potassium Chloride, Soya Oil, Fructo-oligosaccharides, Salmon Meal, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Choline Chloride, Dried Brewers Yeast Extract (source of Mannan-oligosaccharides), Taurine, Vitamins [DL-Alpha Tocopherol (source of Vitamin E), Inositol, Niacin Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), D-Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement], Magnesium Oxide, Borage Oil, Trace Minerals [Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Oxide, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate], Glucosamine Hydrochloride, L-Carnitine, DL-Methionine, Marigold Extract (Calendula officinalis L.), Tea (Green Tea Extract), Chondroitin Sulfate, preserved with Natural Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Citric Acid and Rosemary Extract. My dogs have been doing very well on it, even the one with the ultra sensitive tummy, but with this kind of change, I'm not sure it's the quality food I thought it was. What's your opinion Yorkiemom1, have you noticed the ingredient change? |

I love and trust royal Canin but my dogs poop was just not where I thought it shoukd be so we had to switch. She is very picky though and loved the food. |
Is Royal Canin at a higher, lesser, or equal quality than Wellness CORE/Wellness Small Breed? I like the ingredients of Wellness but a lot of YT members seem to like Royal Canin. |

it depends on who you ask and what you consider higher quality. Dog Advisor (who some people don't recommend) rates food according to protein quality. He rates Wellness Core high. |

Sorry, Teddy hated it, which was a bit concerning since the breeder recommended it and sent him home with it, but oh well! As such, we moved him to Acana which he eats so fast he snorts. Not sure that's great either but at least he eats, right! |

Interesting, I wonder if it's the fat/protein percentage? The grain free is a little higher so maybe that is what they were warning about. Ali is a pup so she is fine with the ingredients for now. The chicken A' La Veg kibble size is close to the RC Yorkie food. It's a flatter piece of kibble vs. the roundness of RC. Ali had trouble with the roundness/crunchability  of RC so she just swallowed it whole and many times it came back up. The Fromm Lamb/lentil is the size of cat food kibble and easier for her to crunch, probably not as hard as some kibble. She has an overbite so more of a challenge. The Wellness Small Breed that Nancy mentioned is a pretty new product so that's an option too? |
I am waiting to get a response from my RC rep. I will paste the response on here, as i am also concerned about a major change in ingredients. |

dog I feed Wellness complete balance chicken and oatmeal and I am very happy with it. My poodle breeder feeds her show dogs that food and their coats she says are beautiful. I agree with her. This is a high quality food. |

Thanks for the ingredients of Wellness, that looks pretty good! |
After all these years of feeding this food with excellent results, no problems, no issues, etc, to now find myself, as my brother says "shot in the a$$" frantically scurrying around, trying to find a dog food that will work as well and been so well tolerated as my RC....I too am in a panic Nancy! I am thinking I may continue to feed the RC, monitor weights and coats and tolerance to the formula change, and if there is not adverse reactions to the new formula, I will continue to feed it.....all the while waiting to hear from the rep. There is no way I could home cook for all these kiddos....and it scares me as a friend of mine was doing it and somehow she screwed up and after a couple of years, her Yorkie's jaw began to deform/weaken/get soft....the vet said that was from something that was missing in her diet (I cant remember the medical name for the condition!) I dont want to go there! |

FWIW, Jackson did not like Orijen but he loves Acana Duck and Pork (from the Singles line). He also does very well on them. He did like the flavor of RC but I felt his poops were too soft and his body condition wasn't the greatest when he ate it. He wasn't on it long though, maybe two months. We've fed Acana the most consistently throughout the years. I always end up back on it lol even through the changes, he still seems to do best on it. |
