Default BREEDERS VETS & SHOTS!

Okay as promised here is my rant on the subject of breeders shots and vets. Please do understand I do not intend any harm to anyone. My intent is to relay just how strongly I feel about vets who insist on NOT trusting a breeder. This practice is contray to good vet care IMHO. These practices are a dis-service to your pet and could mean his/her death! I am NOT slaming anyone. And I really only want to post this thread as an informational thread only. My strong opinion against this type of vet practice is not to create open debate in my mind and my ONLY purpose is the educate puppy buyers of the RISK involved.....

mylittletigger. Your comment about about the vet and shots bothers me greatly. This is a VERY important subject. I will start another thread on this. Please my intent is not to upset you but to educate puppy owners. If you had a valid reason then I apoglize but I still think there needs to be a warning to others.
mylittletigger I have many puppies living in the Dallas/Arlington/Fort Worth area....I would dearly love to know your vets name so I can steer my puppy buyers away from him. I hope you will share his name. Maybe you could post your experiences with this vet in the "products, services review section". By the same token I have the names of several very good vets in that area that are outstanding in their care of Yorkies.

Oh man this is so wrong! Unless one has some valid reason to not trust their breeder then one puts their dog in grave danger by re-vaccinating a puppy. And the problem is one may not see the results for months or even years. We now know that giving shots at 6 weeks of age "may" damage the immature immune system and also the liver. I don't want to go on and on about this but some experts are recomending we wait until after 8 or even 9 weeks to give the first shots when the liver is more mature. Doubling the number of immune shots is just plain crazy.

PLEASE do not allow your vet to give shots which the breeder states have been given. You are putting your dogs life in danger. If you do not TRUST your breeder then for goodness sakes take the dog back. At least have the vet call the breeder to ascertain how he feels about the breeder and her word. Or quarantine your puppy until he's older and ready for the next shot. I get very upset when I read of such statements made by someone's vet about a puppy and his breeder. If you do not trust your breeder then for goodness sakes DO NOT BUY HER PUPPY.

FOR THE FOR THE EDUCATION OF ALL: A puppy should have a series of immune shots beginning around 8 weeks of age and spaced AT LEAST three weeks apart. There should be about three shots with the LAST one given around 16 weeks of age. This is when the immune system is thought to mature and be totally free of his moms protection (given to him at birth). IF THE ONLY SHOT THE PUPPY HAS IS AT 16 WEEKS...then he does NOT need the puppy series....do not let any vet tell you different! Remember puppy series should be given about 8, 12, and 16 weeks. If you miss a shot DO NOT START OVER....just pick up and give shot for the approiate age. If the last puppy shot is at 16 weeks then you do not need to give an immune shot for one whole year. Around 16 months of age.

In my opinion when a vet makes such sweeping statements like "he wanted to be sure" or "do not trust your breeder" etc etc....that vet does not have your puppy's best interest at heart. If your vet says this then I would suggest you find another vet ASAP. I feel so strongly about this that I have a statement in my contract concerning the immune shots. If you allow a vet to re-vaccinate one of my puppies then your health guarantee is VOIDED. Poof. gone. And I have a $3,000 damage clause in my contract. If the buyer as the person I trusted to be his caretaker do not take reasonable means to protect his well being then I will sue the buyer in court! And my contract does not go overboard....it does state information concerning surgery, and immune shots....those two things if valiated will void the contract and you are subject to be sued.

Please before anyone gets themselves riled up.....please know I don't breed a puppy, sometimes actually "breathing life" into him, worry about him, fret over him, and teach him right and wrong.....just to have some vet KILL him. I only impress this upon my buyers as a teaching tool as money seems to be a driving force in people these days. If my buyer "thinks" I will sue them or that I care enough to even make that threat...it brings the "well being" of that puppy to the foremost of their thoughts. THEY PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THE VET SAYS. And sometimes a red flag has gone off in the buyers head. I do get phone calls from the vets office by hestrical owners. After I get thru with the vet....he usually sees things my way.....no vet likes the threat of a lawsuit either. LOL

Again that's my opinion on vets and breeders. I thought this was a very important fact to put out for all to read...
Your vet has no "right" to make current health decisions about your pet based on what he "thinks" happened or didn't happen in the past. When they do not have actual knowledge of the past treatment (s) then I believe the vet should act conservatively. IMHO

My grandma's puppy died from Parvo because the breeder lied about giving him his shots. She never got him re-vaccinated by her vet. Not very wise IMO.

the best way, if your vet makes a statement suggesting not to trust the breeder and repeat all shots this IMHO is the way to handle it.

Simply ask for a titer test to be done, this test will indicate of the dog’s immunological status.

When I vaccinate I keep the peel off label, pasting it on the health record of each puppy along with dating it... If the shots had not been done how would I have the label? The vet can't argue with that, now can he?

So true!! (titer test)

And I also keep the peel off label, to show which vaccine was given, and that it was not expired. And heck no, we wouldnt have access to those labels if we didnt have the vaccines. So glad you brought that up Kim...

As far as her comments on it is better to wait until 8 wks to vaccinate a pup...I've been doing that for years It's really not "new" news.

Yes I too paste those little stickers on the records. And I've still had vets question it. "uh....well how do you know the vaccine was stored correctly and still effective!" type comments. <g> My comment about the 8 weeks were not directed to breeders who are in the know and educated. For every one of the educated breeders there are probably 10 people (including vets) who are not in the know. Not educated about shots. That's where my "rant" was directed. Please do not be offended.
For goodness sakes I can name at least 6 vets here in and around my tiny town that still give immune shots at 6 weeks! It's crazy!

Then the vets are crazy, a breeder wouldnt have the peel off labels if theyre trying to pull a fast one on a buyer. hmmm wonder if there is a black market for vaccination labels, hey I could get rich!!! As far as storing you would think every household has a refer by now its 2006!!

I agree. There is a vet right down the street from mine who does give vaccines at 6 wks. Makes you wonder...Just remember that it is up to us when our pups have shots. If we take a pup in to see a vet at 6 wks, and they want to do it..we have the right to say no and schedule them to come back in a couple weeks. Too many people don't know this, and go along with anything the vet says. I was always one to question things and insist on things a certain way. Is the one fall out my previous vet and I had.

Since we're on the subject of vets and shots...thought i'd say a little about this too:
Have you ever taken a young pup that was not vaccinated in to a vet to be checked out and they will set your pup on the floor to "watch its movement". Don't allow them to do this either until they've been vaccinated. Before you place your pup on the exam table, politley ask them to wash it in the disinfectant spray that most of them use to clean the tables in between patients. Too many times in the past while I was still using a different vet, would they put me in the exam room and I could see hairs on the exam table from the previous patient. The table obviously had not been cleaned. Something to think about. The girls that work at my vet now, bless their hearts, when they see me coming, they get that spray out without me even asking now! hee hee

Veterinarians have to cover their rears, too.

It's cheaper to give 1/2 doses or no vaccine at all and that's what some breeders do.

Do your research and find a vet you can trust and follow their advice.

Good thread.

Robbie when I bring in young pups or any of my dogs for that matter I DO NOT go into the dog section. I go into the cat section and only will see the vet in cat examining rooms.

My vet has only two exam rooms. One for cats, one for dogs. The cat room has a smaller table. 9 times out of 10 we are escorted to that room. I still make sure they wash that table too. If she sees my pups in that room, I'm sure she sees other pups in there. So cat rooms obviously see dogs too.

Is it just me, or do any of you just get down right nervous when taking your pups into a vet office period? I do. I always worry that they will catch something. But they gotta go! So what can we do other than just be as careful as we can...
