| How much do you feed a puppy per day? Hi guys, I am a new yorkie parent and was wondering how much i should be feeding my yorkie puppy? He is 9 1/2 weeks old. Right now he is on scheduled feedings. We feed Maximus 3 times a day about 1/3 cup of dry dog food each time. Max finishes all of his dog food and sometimes he sniffs and licks the empty bowl afterward. He will also sleep next to the empty bowl as well. We also train him using cheerios during the daytime. Am i feeding him enough? any input would be great. thanks guys! |

| With puppies that young, most people recommend free feeding, having food available at all times. Puppies will not overeat. They need a lot of fuel because they are growing. For adult dogs, the correct quantity of food depends on the size of the dog and the food. Some foods are 'denser' nutritionally and have more calories per cup. For instance, Fromm kibble has about 380 calories per cup. Orijen brand kibble has about 480 calories per cup. If I used Orijen, I would give a lot less than the Fromm. Look at the feeding guidelines on the food bag. I think most companies overestimate, so I would go with less than they recommend. Also depends on how active a dog is. A couch potato dog needs less than one who is running all day.

| I free feed my pup Royal Canin. She is now 5 months old and she does not overeat. She will usually eat 3-4 times a day and eats a little less than the recommended amount on the bag. As long as you are feeding dry kibble I would recommend free feeding. If wet food, you can't really free feed because the food could go bad. You could schedule feed wet, and leave dry out all day in case he is still hungry. |

| I free feed dry kibble and do a wet food (dollop) 3x/day with water available at all times. As far as the amount the kibble I don't necessarily measure it out, but it fills the bottom of the bowl.

| It depends on the weight of your dog and what food you're feeding him. I have a four month old who can not finish 1/3 cup in a day. He usually almost finishes 1/4 cup of Nautre's Variety Instinct Raw Boost puppy food, plus Nutrical three times a day, but he's only 2 pounds. If he doesn't eat it, I mix it with some high quality grain free wet food and he usually finishes the whole bowl. |
