With puppies that young, most people recommend free feeding, having food available at all times. Puppies will not overeat. They need a lot of fuel because they are growing.

For adult dogs, the correct quantity of food depends on the size of the dog and the food. Some foods are 'denser' nutritionally and have more calories per cup. For instance, Fromm kibble has about 380 calories per cup. Orijen brand kibble has about 480 calories per cup. If I used Orijen, I would give a lot less than the Fromm.

Look at the feeding guidelines on the food bag. I think most companies overestimate, so I would go with less than they recommend.

Also depends on how active a dog is. A couch potato dog needs less than one who is running all day.
